PREFACE
The Direcgggy Qi Qggrggeg, Missions, egg Qgligious Institutions g§
Tennessee: Egghlngton Qggggg, Qggesboyg is one of a series of v0lumcS
designed to serve as handbooks for ministers, leymen, students, and re-
search specialists in the field of church history and in sociological and
genealogical investigations. The information contained in this volume
will bc incorporated in a Stnte—wide Qirgggggy to be published at a fufuré
date. The preparation of this Qigegjggg is e necessary preliminary step
to insure completeness of inclusion of all churches in the Inventory gi
LQQ Qbgggh Archiggg g§ Qgnnessee being issued in denominational volumes
by the Tennessee Historical Records Survey. The number assigned to this
Dircctogx, 90, merely indicates the alphabetical position of Washington
among the counties of the State.
It is the nature of a directory to defy completion. The absence of
any similar listing, however, and the belief that such 2 directory would
be of value to students us a handbook have been additional factors reeult—
ing in the issuance of this volume. The churches, missions, and religious
institutions are listed by denominations und local affiliations together
with their locations, dates of organizations, and the pastors' names and
addresses. The preparation of this Direcyggg involved examinations of
printed and manuscript church minutes, yearbooks, city and church direct-
cries, and institutional catalogs. These were supplemented by personal
interviews with religious and institutional officials. The denominational
lists were checked with members of the respective faiths. Defunct as well
as active churches are included; publications, boards, and institutions of
the denominations in Tennessee are indicated. Similar directories have
been issued for the counties of Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, and Shelby.
Washington County lies in the extreme northeastern section of Tennes-
see. It is the Stube's oldest county, being erected in l777 as a county of
the State of North Caroline, and existed subsequently us e part of the
Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio before Tennessee
wns admitted to the Union. With a population of 5l,65l in 1940, it is the
seventh lurgest county in Tennessee. Jonesboro is the county seat, but
Johnson City is the largest municipality in the county, and fifth largest
city in the State. The Tennessee Historical Rgcords Survey has operated in
_ Close cooperation with Washington County, an official cosponsor of the
project.
This Qigectorv was compiled by Work Projects Administration workers
under the supervision of Robert Cassell, Church Archives Editor of the
· Tennessee Survey; Tuluh W. Fields, Ballard O. Donnell, and Reginald B.
Martin rendered much assistance. The Jield work in Washington County was
conducted by Mary B. Mosier, Sidney G. Edgar, and Ruth H. Stuart under the
supervision of Edith L. Pierce, District Supervisor. This volume was pre-
pared in accordance with instructions from the Washington Office of the
Historical Records Survey Program; detailed editorial comment and criticism
_ of the book have been mode by Donald A. Thompson, Assietant Archivist in
` charge of Church Archives Inventories. The finnl draft was hyped and
` -··Siencils were cut by Halen P. Allen, Petey R. Floyd, and Emma McCown.

- r Preface
This volume is preliminary and is subject to revision. Corrections
ond additional information are solicited end should be sddrcsscd to the
- State Supervisor, 505 Davidson County Courthouse, Nashville.
Up to ttm present time, approximately l6OO publications have been
issued throughout the nation by the Survey Proéram. In Tennessee, the
Surrey is engaged in a program of preparing guides and inventories to
p county und municipal archives, church archives, manuscript depositcries
»' and collections, and early American imprints, and making transcriptions
of basic public records, chiefly early county court minutes.
A list of the publications of the Tennessee Historical Records Survey
follows the indexes to this Qirectorv. The publications of tho Historical
Records Survey projocts in all states ore limited in number ond in con-
sequence nre plucod in designated centrally located dopositorics.
Inquiries requesting the locations of the nesrost depositories should he
addrcssod to the State Suporvisors or to the Division of Community Service
Progress, Work Projects Administration, Washington, D. C., for attention
