’ PREFACE. /

HE CHRISTIAN HYMNARY is a revision and enlargement of the Gospel
Hymnal. It is the result of action taken by the American Christian
Convention, the General Convention (South), and the Christian Pub—

lishing Association. The committee entrusted with this work represents
both sections of our Zion. Since the Convention at Marion, Indiana, Octo~
ber, 1890, the work has been pushed as rapidly as possible.

The Christian Hymn Book, Christian Hymns and Gospel Hymnal have
furnished most of our hymns, yet some have been gathered from other
sources. They seem to be suflicient in number and variety for the use of
most congregations in their public services. Very little of music for Sunday
Schools and social services has been used, as there are so many books de—
signed especially for their use. The right to use some giusic that greatly
enriches the Hymnary, has been purchased, or free use obtained.

For the free use of their compositions, thanks are due to Dr. H. R. Palmer
and Prof. W. G. Tomer.

Space has been saved by not repeating first stanzas.

To meet the wants of many we have inserted chants, responses, and
responsive readings.

The indexes are sufficiently copious to render much aid in the use of
the book.

Excellent work has been done by Gunther & Co. in preparing the plates,
also by the Groneweg Printing Co., under the supervision of Rev. Geo. E.
Merrill, the publishing agent, who has rendered efficient service in the coni-
pletion of our work.

We all regretted that Miss Helen C. Goff was not able to serve on the
Committee until the work was finished; but we were fortunate in having
the assistance, in her place, of Miss Ida E. Peake, who rendered valuable
assistance.

We trust this book may aid in the service of the Lord’s house, and shall
be amply compensated for our labor, which has drawn us into closer fellow-
ship, if thoSe who use the Hymnary may be helped to a sweeter fellowship
with all true disciples, to a firmer trust in God, and to a, truer Christian
service.

2 No more fatigue, no more distress,
Nor sin, nor death shall reach the place:
No groans to mingle with the songs
Which warble from immortal tongues.

3 No rude alarms of raging foes;

N o cares to break the long repose;
No midnight shade, no clouded sun,
But sacred, high, eternal noon.

4 O long-expected day, begin;
Dawn on these realms of woe and sin:
Fain would we leave this weary road,
And sleep in death, to rest with God.

The, dawn of thy returning day;
My thoughts, 0 God, ascend to thee;
While thus my early vows I pay.

2 I yield my heart to thee alone,

Nor would receive another guest;
Eternal King, erect thy throne,

And reign sole Monarch in my breast.

2% O, hid this trifling world retire,

And drive each carnal thought away.
Nor let me feel one vain desire,

Qne sinful thought, through all the day.

4 Then, to thy courts when I repair,
My soul shall rise on joyful wing,
The wonders of thy love declare,
And join the strains which angels sing.
