‘ Your welcome letter frovauthrie came a few moments ago
and I was surprised to tnow that you were outside of fentucky.
What a blessing you are to the suffrage cause, and having the means to
do with ,ma es it a pleasure for you to do this glorious work.
May you be soared to see all the women of these United
States free and chal citizens. I thanw you for the documents enCIOSed
with your letter, they will—be valuable for us in this state.
The solution of the Race rrohlem iswhat I pelieve in and am willing
to endorse it. All the prominent organizations of the state are
united to sign a sill which is oeing prepared to oresent to our legis—
lature, asking for full suffrage. nn initiative and referendum bill
was introduced last week by Senator Fitzpatriox of Winona of this star
It proyides that the people can oreuare Cy cetition, laws and amena—
ments to the constitution ano to enact 0r reject the same at the
polls indecendent of the legislature. The liquor power is strong
in this state, and I am sure that this power electeu Governor Johnson.
The chief of Police of this city, gave 5 ZCOO, and Frenzied Finance
Lawson of Boston 3 1000, which meant the liquor influence. and now the
-Governor has to face the pressure from the legislature on the local on
Option question which he evaded in his message. l'am disappointed in
the Governor, for last year he ooeniy proclaimed himself in favor of
woman having the ballot.I oelieve that the liquor dealers knowing this
.laid their plans to defeat him unless he yielded to them.
There will oe a great amount of work to be done if we hegin a camoaign
and we will expect to have some of the woraers woo assisted wi h the
word in Oxlahoma. I hope we will gain something this session of Our
legislature as it is called the legislature for reform. I will tell

To-night I loaVe for a week's engagements in New York and
Massachusetts. My first meeting is in the vicinity of Rochostor and will permit me
to spend the day to-morrow with miss Anthony. The latest news we have from Lucy is
that Miss Mary has been sleeping better the past few nights and has been practically
without pain but that she continually grows weakor. It is the sincere hope of us all
chat she may quietly pass away without the intense suffering which was endured a few
weeks since.

I encloso a copy of a letter roceivod from hrs. “lagers. There
are no direct statements in it but I thought perhaps yo” would like to know her point
of View in regard to ﬁhe possibility of securing recognition in the Constitution, also
the length of time our campaign would have to be carried on if an amandment of any
form in our interest should be submiﬁtod.

I trust that each member of the Business Hommitteo will come to
the first meeting on the morning of February twelfth at the Palmer House with an out-
line prepared of any proposition or proposiﬁions she desires co have discussed beforo
the Executive meeting. I shall be in Chicago on the morning of the eleventh, as I
spoak in Englewood on that day, so that if any of yOu should arrive on the eleventh,
you will find me at tho Palmer House.

I cannot tell you how difficult it has heen to scours sgoakers
for our Convention. Never has there been such a number of letters written to various
and diver: people as this your and I think it will grow harder and harder instead of
easier to secure desirablo speakers. no are continually demanding a higher grado of

meeting, bringing in outside issues which, if discussed ah all, should be discussed

It seems the hardest thing in the world to find time to write

letters outside of the territories. Of course thoy must come first. we did have a
splendid Hearing and a good impression was left. Next Tues. night we have a mass
moeting in the Opera House. I will try to remember to send you a copy of invitation.
In addition to speakers named there will be several local women and other men probably.

we havo been very busy mailing petitions which someone has In-
daubtedly written you of. Some answers to the first ones sent are already coming in.

There will be nothing done in Convention on our question for some
days. I was at home from Sat. until Tune. looking after some petition work to be done
there and finding some way to bring oressuro to boar upon our delegate.

“r. owon went to Washington the first of ﬁhe week to be gone a
week or ten daye and it is the understanding that nothing will be done in Committee
or Convention until he returns.

Nothing has as yet been decided either about the time for adjourn-
mont or the length of time between adjournment and vote upon conntihltion. A motion
was made a few days ago to have the vote in Sept. but no action was taken. Some say
it will be in Aug. In fact the time is Eélggd all the way from June to Sept, I hope

the time will be short.

Things are getting along as well as could be hoped for I think.

I had a discussion yesterday with an Episcopal clergyman on this suoject,
and he is like old Bishop Doane. The preachors are afraid that the

women will desert the churches. I get out of sorts with them.
