WALL ST. EXCHANGE BUILDING

N08. 43 WALL AND 43 EXCHANGE PLACE

NEW YORK, MiaPCh 14:, 1908

My Dear Miss Clay:

For your very kind words respecting my hurridly prepared
paper, please accept my thanks. I am convinced that we have the right
to the franchise, and that it cannot legally be taken from us; that any
state COnStitution depriving us of the exercise of this right, is uncons
stitutional,e and I am most anxious that we have other test cases.

I do wish that women in many parts of our (?) country would act concert=
edly to this end. This year Mrs. Harriet Stanton Blatch will run for

the assembly in our state, and we will take the case to the.U.S.Supreme‘
Court, if necessary. Can you not arrange to have some woman do likewise

in your State,? I think perhaps it would be better for her to run for

congress, and then have the women try to vote for her for that office.

W
-The constitutional expressly states that . . 1 shall be elected by

to
the Eeoglg. If we can get womenfido this in every state where suffrage

does not obtain, it will continue the agitation and emphasize our deters
mination to insist upon a recognition of our rights.

With many good wishes for your Peace, Happiness and Success,

‘ d (/
sand complimenting you upon your wise selection of a slogan, i.e. The

,, II
'Truth shall make you free,

Faithfully yours, 7/

Mrs. Adelia C. Stephens
' 725 W. California Ave.
Oklahoma City, Okla.
Dear Madam:-

State suffrage is provided for male citizens on all
questions, for school purposes for women, but the right of each city to
make its Own charter is also provided and municipal suffrage can be given
by the City in its charter without violation of law.

The Constitution of the United States does not Btbid women suffa
frage, its interpretation has done so.

Yours very respectfully,
Rob't L.Owen
