Dear Miss Clay:-

You will see from the enclosed what a large and enthusias—
tic meeting we had in Cincinnati yesterday. 30 many of the Clubs in
southern Ohio and northern Kentucky had members present that I feel as I
was chosen to go to Washington by those present, I had better do so. I
think it courteous,however, that the Officers of the Suffrage Club should
endorse my going, and I therefore write to you to signifywhether thisjmeets
your approval. It Was not a suffrage resolve, however, and as I waé:ﬁﬁéﬁl
imously appointed to go from Kentucky, I think I had best go and not risk
a woman being present,through any delays that might arise through having to
await the action of so many individuals and sejarate Clubs.

I am now writting President Taft asking that women shall be
allowed to attend this convention, and that we should be given the right of
a hearing beforégthis Gdnference. I should have an answer very soon, as the
meeting comes off within several weeks. I am prepared to address this Con—
ference andﬂshow us the women's side of this divorce matter.

to have e bill passed by our next Yegisleﬂure. granting women
School Suffrage. The Women's Club of Central Kentucky is aiding
in this effort, and in order to bring to bear all the public'influ-
ence lossihle in Fayette County and iexington, it has invited other
societies to send regresentutivee to L joint committee.

I have been epiointed to extend this inviﬁption go the
W- C. T. U. of Fayette County, and T hereby very cordially invite
your Chilesburg t. C. T. U. to appoint three reyreeentatives to
the Joint Committee on School ?uffrege For “omen. So far es the
work has been outlined the duties of this Joint Committee are to
arrange for a mess ieeting to he held in the first week of January,

The attention of the officers of the Yentucky Equal ﬁights
W's ocistion has been c iled to the fact that “resident Taft is moving
in the matter of a Universal Divorce Law, and that a meeting is soon to
be called in Washington to consider it, comyosed of representatives an-
pointed by the Governors of the states.

We believe that in the solution of a Question of such vital im-
portance to the home and the family, in which women are as deeply inter»
ested and us well informed as men, it is a matter of justice and Sound
hi9 dom that thev should h vs a share in the discussion and settlement of
the question. i

I am therefore instructed by the officers of the Kentucky Equal

Rights Association to rednest and urge you , in appointing representatives

to this meeting, to appoint at least one woman from Kentucky.

I am fUrrher instructed to recommend to your consideration for
this position Mrs.}1ate Trimhle T"oolsey, whose address is Covington, Corner
Robbins and Madison Aves.

self had a 3.egal education and is in every way com etent to be a useful
and intelligent member of the conference.

I received your note yesterday. I am unable to say why

the executors of deer Laura's will diddnot request the trustees of the
Good Samaritan IosLitnl to have some memorial to her, in recognition of
her liberal legacy to the hospital. You remember I was not in the state,
but was in Ores on, at the time her will was acted upon. If I had been
here I ncnld have gladly suggested that the executors should take some
such step; and if you do not think it is now too late, I wvuld willingly
do so now. I

I have taken care that her benevolence to the cause of quffrnge for
‘Women shall nee; her memory constantly before the {soils vho J_ove that
cause. Aceordi.ng to her will, I exiend the interest of the legacy of which
I am tr istee for the objects of the National .uffrsg e Association; and I
have the items of receipts and expenses published yearly in the innual
Report of the Rational $uffruge_xssociation. In this way there are thous»
ands who are yearly reminded of her noble spirit; and in the states where
her legacy has been of help in the work, there are many grateful hearts

who bless and revere her memorv ‘
