CATHAR‘INE WAUGH MCCULLOCH

flies Laura Clay,
Richmond, Khntuoky.

Dear Miss Clay :-

Yours of Mhy 20 received. I am about to go to
Indiana to speak for a Club, and so write you briefly.

I am glad Miss Gordon did so well at the National
Biennial.

Yes, Hrs. Belmont signed the lease and it was
returned to Mrs. Stewart sometime ago.

The contract with Kiss Blackwell is still unsigned
as lies Shaw has made another condition which I told her
ought to be submitted to the Board. Kiss Blackwell is
meditating about whether she will approve that condition.

The condition was that an appraisement of the woman's Journal

roperty be made now by three persons, one to be chosed\

fly the National and one by Miss Blackwell and the third by

those two,and that this appraisement of the Journal stock

be called its value. If at any time flies Blackwell wishes

to withdraw a new appraisement should be made in a similar

manner and she should pay the increased Value of the

stock to the National. If the stock had decreased in value

the National itself had decided to withdraw it should pay

/, the [annals—Journal the difference. I wrote M so Shaw that
'“ this last clause put an obligation on to the national greater

than that which we had assumed.

As for the new officers I am voting for Mrs. Caroline
Bartlett Crane for First Vice firesident. She is a great
woman with a splendid following among club women conserva-
tives, and would bring us great prestige. I had not
thought of Kiss Gordon as reasurer though I doubt not that
she would do well. I thought that a New York woman
being chosen as Treasurer would be great ooonomy, and
suggested Harriet may hills.

Yours hastily,
In

Miss Gregg is still in the field and doing splenflid work.WE now have

more than 2900 members.I do hope she can stay with us until the work a
is finished. If the statehood bill does not pass at this session,we Will
be 1? splendid shape for the next legislature, and I believe we can
win.It will mean a lot of hard work but I have made up my mind to stay
with the work until we Win or lose this time.Miss Gregg is such a treas-
ure and it is suhh adelight to work with her.

The other women art coming nobly to the front, and are helping a great
deal.0f course the burden falls on me to a great extent but someone

has to do it and Why not me? I am glad I can do it.

I sent you a copy of The Women's Era containing an article on the suffrage
work here .Did you receive it?

I thank you very much for all the assistence you have given us and if

we do meet with success this time,I will know where a great deal of the

credit is due.

With best wishes,Sincerely yours,
