Member of‘ Officii 1 Board N. A. 'w. s. A.

I have delayed two waaka longer to wake the official
report on Woman'o Journal contract, hoping to get in the vote of

Misa Ashley.

The vote was: Yes u Clay, Stewart, Gordon, a McCullooh;
No — Show & Dennctt. Not heard from — Aahlay. Blackwell not
voting, though her vote would have been "yes".

The oontract is therefore ratified by a vote of four to
two.

Nico Gregg wrote June 6th to Miss Shaw for inatructiona
about her vacation, and other aattars, and this latter Hiao Dan-
nott turned ovar to me a few days ago, and I wrote to Miss Gregg
Juno 26th, saying I would anbmit to official vote whatever one
than desired, as conditions had changed. sno hag not rayliad to
me, and I can only imaging?that aha will now be anxioua not to
take a vacation, but to push ahead, getting ran who ara :ladgad
to us oloctod'to the Arizona constitutional convention. The con—
venticn will be probably held in September.

Miss Gregg naa written to Miaa Gordon and Miss Clay about
the necessity of an aaouranco from.Presidont Taft that a woman
suffrage clause in the Arizona constitution would not oauaa him
to veto it. She said some men anxious for Statehood would atand
for suffrage a: it did not endanger tha constitution.

Mien Gordon suggests Mrs. Bennett as chairman, and some—
thing in her lottor makes me think Mia“ a:ay would also be accept—
able as the two woman who would interview Praaidant Taft. I have
talked it over with Mrs. Stewart, and one nnd.I so thoroughly ap-
prove Miss Gordon's idea that I hereby ask both Mrs. Bennett and
M159 Clay, if they approve, to communicate with each other, and
arrange an interview, and I can later send out a vote on this if
both Miss Clay and Mrs. Eonnatt approve or disapprove. Now is the

time for most atronous work.

As to the south Dakota aituation, Dr. Aylaaworth has wr1t~
ton Mrs. Bennett and Mro. Stewart vary hopefully. Miss Harriet
Grim, whose salary and expenses for one month were paid by the
Illinois Equal Suffrage Association has completed her work, did
not think the South Dakota women oooporatod aa they should, and
Dr. Aylesworth complains of lack of advance work.

Mrs. Bennett hag sent no matter for two admirable leaflets.
When printed, she will send each of you copies. The? arc aititled
"The Real Point”, and "Ward organization".

_ Mrs. Bennett is troubled about tho coat of printing the
minutes. As this was left in bar hands, our view: on tho subject
are meroly adviaory, not mandatory. If aha will greatly dondonso
and delay printing till our champion money oollactor, Mina Shaw,
returns, more money might be in. We must not oxoaad appropriation.

Mrs. Bennett has also asked me about vacations, and as
director of tha.offica forcw, this is under har aole control.
I adviac her to plan to have all tho clerks and atanographora to
whom vacations arc duo, take them now, an as to have the yhold
force at hand when the hoary work begina’on Miss Shaw's return.

Member of the Official Board: _
Since writing you yesterday, Miee thley'e negative

. e on the Journal contract has come in, and the vote now stance
A to 3, Miss Blackwell not voting. The oontraot is, however, ap~

proved. 1.

I, as the one who prepared the eontroct, wish that the
ohiections of those voting against the contract had been sent me,
eomthat I might, perhaps, have altered it enough so that the Gone
tract could have received as unanimous a vote from the Hoard as the
general proposition did from the convention.

It is unfortunate for the success of our new venture
that the three who have voted against the contract are file only
salaried officers, and whoee on whom most of the burden of puehing
the Journal will fall. I do not doubt, however, that they will
try most faithfully to carry out the Convention’s wiehes.

Miss Ashley sent to me a hatowritten etatement of
finances which is encouraging. I will ghow it to Mrs. Stewart, ané
then mail to M155 Gordon. asking her to mail to Miss Clay, and she
in turn to Miss Blackwell, and she back to me, to save copying.

Mrs. Stewart and I must sometime send in u hill for
stehographerfls fees and postage. I have not even a scrap of nation~

a1 stationery. But that in due season.

The regolar monthly expeneee include three etehogrephn

$135.00 per month beeide Penfield, Gretg, and Boyer.

Miss Ashley wants advice on the matter of Woman'o
Journal money, and I thus advise her, asking criticisms from each
of you to us.

As Treaezrer of the N. A. W. S. A. Miee Ashley must
Ree? track of all monies.

She should plan some scheme of supervising the Jouhm
nal'e hook—keeping so that she knows whet 13 being done, and at the
end xxx of the month oend check for deficit, or receive check as
balance. A small amount on hand for small expenses she ovuli ar~
range for. Miss.iehley and Miss Ryan can agree upon some working
plan. The auditors at the end of the year, with Miss Aehley‘e
help should audit the Journal booko.

Miss Ashley also asks about orders. She is right in
saying she must pay without orders, but I believe you will all agree
with me that if she mahee an estimate of what is needed for misoel»
lotions items for May and June that the Secretary and l eon Sign
an order on Miss Ashley to pay that much to herself for little
running expenses for July. Then if she has a balance ehe can turn
it in at the end of the month, and so on.

Now as to Arizona~ Miss Gregg writes July 1 that she
will not take her vacation now, but Keep at field work. Election
for delegatee will amour Sept. 12, anfi Convention assemble Oct. 10.

Mrs. Sheldon‘s report. Sioux Falls, S.D.

For month June 15, to July 13.

June 14 took up the regular correspondence and as tn
regular stenographer was away on vacation had to do the mechan—
ical work as well as planning and getting in touch with the
work. I got out thirty letters myself the second day, not by
dictation but by compoSition by delving into files etc., to get
the trend of correspondence. Placed Dr. Aylesworth through
my own efforts alone at the Iollowing places in which he readh-
ed about 1800 people and had better collections than at all
previous meetings; this is his own statement. ' ‘
