CAROLINE I REILLY. CHAIRMAN

Dear Miss Clay:-
Do you know how I can procure a photograph of

Mrs. Desha Breckinridge and of Miss Sophanisba Breckinridge?
I haVe written them both, and received a letter from Miss 3.,
dated Holderness, N.H., and saying she had none with her. I
have heard nothing from Mrs. B. I‘am sure they do not realize
the importance of this matter in connection with the convention.
I an get almost anything into the papers, both here and elsefiflre,
but it is necessary to have photographs, as the papers insist
upon it. The New York Sunday Tribune, which is antiesuffrage, will
run a splendid story on Southern women and suffrage if I can only
succeed in getting the pictures. Can you help me out?

This reminds me,that I have none of you, either, and if you
could send me one, or two, it would be the greatest help to me.
The development in the press work is very Wonderful, and if I were
physically dale to work twenty-four hours a day I could use every
minute of it to advantage.

Looking forward to meeting you in Louisville next montha

Very sincerely,

September 19 , 191i .

My dear

I am putting on my thinking cap, or rather my momory cap, and will
try to state accurately my knowledge or lack of knowledgo regarding the
Belmont lease.

As far as I can romembor, the only question regarding the lease that
troubled me was whether it Wd$ in such shape that we could not be turned
out at a week's notice if any one were minded to do so. I don’t remember
that I gave the matter another thought, except to pay rent. I took it
for granted that the lease, or contract or whatever the paper was, was in
proper form since it had of oouroe been passed upon by Era. No Gullooh,
and I dont remember anything about any intorlinoatioue. I think I took
it for granted that Mroe Belmont's own leaoe ran until Catcher lot, 1911,
because it is unusual in New York for leases to expire at any other time,
except that sometimes they expire the firot of may.

‘ When the time came that first Belmont had.to give her answer as to
whether or not she would renew her laaoe at 505 Fifth Avenue-thio wag
sometime in April 1911-I learneo that he? lease and.therefore ouro ox“
pirod on Auguot first, she deciede not to renew and our prob131 was upon
USe About this same time, she decided not to continue her contributions
to the National, but to give flOOO toward the rent instead.

Now I don’t to assert that I didn‘t know anything about the inter“
linoationo before the time I mention, beuauoe it is quite possible I did.
All I can say is I retained no impression of them. I was a total stran~
gar to the National work, quite unfamiliar wifi: the methods of the Board
and I was at the time chiefly impreoeed by the great responsibility the
Association had undertaken of paying the bills of the Woman's Journal

without any provision having been made at the Convention for doing so.

You will therefore $86 that at least part of my manifold shortcomings
( and I have no Wish to deny them ) was the result of being too suddenly
plunged into a confusion of all sorts of claims upon the treasurer, these
claims being at first merely names to me.

Your letter seemo to convey the impression that I am too blame for
not having intormed myself and then you of the interlinowtiona, this may
to true, but 1n that case may I not claim that it was equally the duty of
Mrs. Stewart to lnform herself about the paper She filed away? Was it
not equally toe duty of Mrs. Mo Cullooh to report what she found in the

document and was it not her duty to insist upon seeing the said document
