Dear Miss Clay,
I have not made myself quite clear. I should indeei
enjoy all the outings you suggest, but that is not exactly what 3
am after. I want to come in touch with the actual life of the

people out Ln .“c cerrtr".\ I am not very particular whether it is
blue—grass plains or mou“tains. I quite recognise the difficulti
ies of doing much in the latter in a short time. Not only is trae
velling difficult and slow, but it is very expensive. Again with

out introductions from some one whom they know intimately enough

to trust it is doubtful whether I should get to know the mountain

people at all as they are very distrustful of strangers . Perhpa
you may he r of something for me. If I had a companion it would

in some ways be easier, but I have not heard of any and am not lik
1y to here at this season of the year.

I have been reading your letter re the proposed 0
constitution with much interest. Constitutions are not my strong
point and yet I know they are the expression and may easily be t
the miSsexpression of the people's will. As to my own amendment
to alter the objectof theAssociation from "To obtain the Vote" to
"To obtain political, le.gal and social ( or economic) equality f

for women".I know it cannot be voted upon this convention for it W1

went in too late. But indeed I an L - we. icularly anxious that

anything should be done in a huryly upon a point so fundamentélfifiB

My dear Miss Clay:
/

I have just had a note from Marion 3. Fenwick of
San Antonio, Texas, saying: that the two oes‘ songs in the
congetition for the prize for the best suffrage words to the
tune of Dixie, are of about equal merit, and she suggests
that both songs be sung at the Convention, and that the final
decision be made then.

She asks what we think of the plan. I have written
nor that we will leave that matter to the Music Committee
.ouisville, as I understand from Rise Robinson that the

Committee disapproved of suffrage campaign songs alto—

National matters ”afore 1 go to LouiSVille, and I will take
all the letters with me in my trunk too to have for refe_c
in the discussions in the Roerd meeting.

I wrote Mrs. Moo ullooh today that I considered that
last letter whioh Miss Shaw sent out shout her mixing
things up in California, e very insulting one and that
Inwas ready to roll up my sleeves and do some fiqhtinq on
her behalf. I told her I thouznt she would sing f hs"e to
stand now for re-election as Vice “resident. She has been
on only one year, end I certainly an 0::osed to their chasing
her off after one year's snoumhsnoy When they were so glad
to get her at Washington after Mrs. Avery's resignation.

I feel the same way about Miss Gordon. As a matter of
fact Miss Shaw really juqqled votes in order to get Miss Gordon

.d. Miss Gordon does not know this and I would he the

to tell her: out now it is a prett .‘o: for her to be

trying to routfl Miss Gordon as soon ;' rs . that Miss

Gordon has served her purpose. There is no douht that we will
have to ventilate some transsotions. This is a personal

letter to you, and not a Board letter.
