October 9th, 1912.

I have sent the enclosed notice to Miss Blackwell, with

the request that she print it in "The Woman's Journal" of October 12th,

I think you should know at least these brief facts. or

course the whole situation will be thoroughly discussed at the Convention.

Yours sincerely,

 IMPORTANT NOTICE

It is my duty to announce that "T}.e V :man's Journe l" is no
longer the off icia l organ of the National Am:_i .an Texan Suffrage
Association. lhe connecticn w.s severed by Mi:s Blackwell an September
30th, 1912.

Miss Blackwell, who owns a majo o1it§ of tha stoc: of "The Woman's
Journal", had made a fGCn3ition, in Sopt1mber, to the Official Board of
the National AmeVEC4n Women Suffro~c Ansoc1nticn, that the contract
between the Journal and the National Association, be terminated by
mutual consent. But the legal adviser of the Association decided that
the Board could not accept this preposition and that only the Convention
had power to torm1no to t‘no contia: . This opinion had been formerly held
by Miss Blackwell, herself, and was also hold unanimously by the Board,
when a similar proposiu tion was made on June 29th.

When, by reason of the heavy expenses of maintaining the National
work, including "The Woman's Jaurnal", the Board voted to reduce expenses

all along the line, Miss Blackwell refused to cut down the expenses of
”The Woman‘s Journal". She then announced her intention of taking "The
Woman's Journal" back, whether the Board had power to terminate the
contract or not.

She justified this course on the ground that the National
Association had already broken the contract by failure to pay the bills
incurred by "The Woman's Journal". The National has NEVER refused to
pay the bills of the paper, and has done so to its utmost ability.

Dear Editor:
We have been informed from a reliable source that Kansas
Will be flooded With anti—suffrage literature during the last ten
days before election. This literature, it is reported, will be
sent out by the liquor interests and those opposed to good
government and clean living.

Will you kindly co—operate with us by printing the follow—

attempt?

Topeka, Kan., Oct. 26,1912.
A report is current that during the last ten
days before election, Kansas will be flooded
with anti-suffrage literature. This letter
will be cleverly worded and very insidious
inits influence. The letters and circulars
are sent out under various names, the Mer-
chants’ and Manufacturers’ League, State
Business Men’s League, Progressive Protec-
tive League, Progressive League, Progress-
ive Headquarters and other misleading
titles. Postal cards are sometimes sent to
every voter in the state. These are said to
emanate from those interested in the liquor
traffic. Posters with such captions as:
“When In Doubt, Vote No,” are hung in
conspicuous places. All persons interested
in good government and clean living are
warned against them.
