 July 12, 191:5.

Mrs. Mary Ware Dennett,
New York City.

My dear Mrs. Dennett:

I am writing to you to ask the Wational Board to define my
positiOn in the State of Louisiana. In a communication from the Na-
tional Press Superintendent, Miss Eyrne, asking if I could make use of
press material in the interest of the National constitutional amendment,
she made a note that a similar copy had been sent to Mrs. Meehan.

Now, the organized suffragists of the State are on record
as Opposed to this National amendment. The new Woman Suffrage Party,
according to statements in its correspondence, have organizeé Solely to
secure the submission of a State amendment to be submitted Lo the v0!
tors. Now, if they take up this constitutional amendment, it is going
to force us to make a public report upon our position and the reasons
why. I do think that until this organization has something more to it
than the skeleton upon which it etande, that the Kational Aesociition
might stand by the State Association an& allow it the right to define
its own policies. If the Raiional is going to interfere with the State
work, then it is no wonder that National disruption in the shape of
bankruptCy is threatening.

Again i ask, as the recoanized State President, to give me
some idea of the status of this other organization and What my ri hte
and duties are to the national and what the rights and duties are.

This national anendment situation shows the creeo~purposee at which we
are working. Do not think for a moment that I fear this other organi—
zation. If it can do better work than we have done, if a hand ful of
women can come intoya State and dictate in their ignorance of condi»
tions Our policieel let them do it; but what I want to know is, where
our Hational responsibility begins and ends. In the old days of the
Wational a State had an absolute State right policy, and I do think
;hat rowr “ress Superintendent has certainly taken an unfortunate step
in recognizing equally with the National's State organization an organ-
ization nboee membership consists in pinning on buttous on peeple and
then calling them members. Ho dues, nothing else but notoriety for a
few women. ‘

I would appreciate Vufy much an immediate answer to this
letter, for upon yOur reply I shall base my future relation with the
National, after due consultation vith the anrd.

Will you also kindly tell me if the Vational Yinutns have
been published. If so, I hawe not received a copy.

Very truly yours,
