ANNUAL ROLL CALL

November 6, 1957

miss Laura clay
Lexington,Kentucky

near miss Clay:

Your attention is invited to the Annual Roll Call of
the American Red Cross which begins November llth and extends to
Thanksgiving.

Since January 1, 1937, your local chapter has given
service to 528 cases exclusive of the cases during the flood period
from January 22nd to March lst, which amounted to 2,590 in number.
The work has been done by the Chapter and by 310 volunteer assis-
tants to whom the gratitude and appreciation of the public are due.
We are not able and it is not necessary to enumerate all the ser—
vices rendered by the Red Cross during the flood period; the memory
of it is so recent and the work was so effective as to speak for
itself.

In addition to the services enumerated, 585 garments
have been given through the Chapter to School children; first aid
instruction given to 78; home hygiene and care of the sick is being
taught to a class of 20 girls in the Henry Clay High School, and
life saving instruction has been given to 93 girls and boys.

You are requested, as heretofore, to send your centri-
bution, which we trust may be as liberal as possible. to the treas—
urer of the local chapter of the American Red Cross in the enclosed
stamped addressed envelope. We thank you for making the work possible
and assure you that every effort will be made to justify your con-
tinued support and confidence.

Very truly yours,

Miss Laura Clay,

My dear Miss Clay:

I was reading in our Courier-Journal where a dinner
was to be given you at the Y. .C.1.

It gave me so much pleasure to know that you were
well and about as usual that in the afternoon I telephoned to
the Y.lT C.fl. here overlooking the fact that the di.nner was to
be in Lexington. It was my expectation to drop in and congre13u—

late you and was, therefore, disappointed.

You will recollect that you provided me with an oppor-
tunity of making history when I nominated you at the Democratic
Convention in San Francisco in 1920 for the presidency of the
United States and got a nice complimentary vote. This was the
first time that a Major Party ever nominated a woman for the
office of president and Lyman Abbott then editing the "Outlook"
featured extensively this incident as the outstanding politiCal
history of the year.

I shall always remember our very pleasant trip to the
Coast and especially your debate enroute with Senator welsh of
Montana on the League of Nations, when we were the guests of
Mrs. Harriman now minister to Denmark.

It occurred to me that you might be interested in the
very nice article which apoeared in the Courier-Journal and of
which I am enclosing a Copy.

Hoping you continue to remain very well and with many

good wieies, remain

Yours very truly,/

To the members of Christ Church,

Lexington, Kentucky.

It is with an humble sense of inadequacy in our past
Christian service that we again summon you to a revival of zeal
in the work of the Church and to a reconsecration as members of
the body of Christ.

In these times of world crisis when the forces of evil
are challenging our deepest convictions, we turn to the Church,
with a realization that while the indifference and failure of its
members have contributed to the present dark days, yet in its
mission lies the hOpe of mankind.

The evil in the world is too strong for an indifferent
and complacent Church. Every member, therefore, should realize
the warfare in which we are enlisted, and the part which each of
us has assumed.

We commend to your careful readinthhe enclosed copy
of the inspiring message to the Church by the Presiding Bishop
Tucker over the radio last Sunday.

A GOpy of the Budget for the coming year 1941 which
has been approved by your vestry is also enclosed. This calls for
slightly increased giving, over the current year, but is a minimum
of what should be undertaken.

It is trusted that you will welcome those who call upon
you in the Every Member Canvass, and generously and conscientiously

make your pledge of support for the coming year.
