CONSTITUTION.

WHEREAS the drinking usages of Society
and the excessive use ofintoxicating drinks
have to a large extent obscured the fact that
Temperance is the Law of the Gospel, and
imperatively demanded by the Baptismal
VOW; and,

WHEREAS it is the duty of the Church,
in her normal capacity, to promote the
principle of temperance by all proper
means in her power, it is hereby resolved '
to adopt the following Constitution :

ARTICLE I.
Name and Motto.

The Name of this Society shall be—

rlens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

ARTICLE II.
Afilmtion.

This Society shall be aiiiliated with the
organization known as The Church Tem-

The objects of the Society are:

l. The promotion of“ Temperance.

2. The removal of the causes that lead
to Intemperanee.

35. The. reformation of the intemperate.

Recognizing temperance as the law of
the Gospel, and total abstinence as a rule
of conduct essential in some, and highly
desirable in many other cases; yet fully
and freely according to every man the right
to decide, in the exercise of his Christian
liberty, whether or not he will adopt said
rule, this Society lays down as the basis
on which it rests, and from which its work
shall be conducted, a union and co-opcra—

tion, for the furtherance of temperance,
between those who use moderately and
those who entirely-abstain from alcholic
drinks as beverages.

ARTICLE IV.

Membership.

Any person above the age of sixteen
may become a member of this Society by
enrolling his or her name in one or other
of the two sections, known respectively as
A and B. The signatures of those enter-
ing Section A. are appended to the follow-
ing declaration, namely :

I recognize my duty to exert myself for the
suppression of inteinperance, and will do what
I can, both by example and precept, to promote
the objects of this Society. In furtherance of
this, Iliereby agree, with the help of God, to
abstain wholly from all alcoholic drinks, except
under medical order, or for a sacramental pur-
pose. This engagement is to bind only so long
as I retain my certificate of membership of the
Society.

The signatures of those entering Section
B are appended to the following declara-
tion, namely:

to he watchful of the inllnenee of my example
on those in special peril from the temptation to
excess. and to discourage, in all ways that com—
mend themselves to my judgment and niye on—
science. such drinking usages 11s are at Variance
with the interests of good morals. This en—
gagement to bind only so long as I retain my
certificate of membership of the Society.

These two declarations shall be entered,
at different places, in a book kept [‘or the
purpose, and there shall he given to each
person whose name is attached to one or
other of them a certificate of membership.
stating to which of the sections the holder
belongs.

A member may, at any time. relinquish
his connection with the Society, and free
him (or herself ) from any and all obligation
thereto, by returningr his or her certificate
of membership to the secretary.

Should any member desire, at any time.
to be transferred from the section with
which they stand connected to the other,
the secretary shall permit a new enrolment
of such member, and change their certifi-
cate of membership accordingly.

 

     

    

CONSTITUTION.

ARTICLE V.
Meetings and Entrance Fees.

1. The entrance fee (for Card and Rules)
will be fifteen cents; with a monthly sub—
scription of five cents, payable on the
regular meeting in every month.

2. Special TEA—MEETINGS may be held,
which will be specially attractive.

3. All meetings of this Society shall be
opened and closed with prayer, in accor-
dance with the Ritual.

4. The annual meeting of the Society
shall be held in the mouth of January of
each year, when the report shall be read
and the oII’icers elected.

ARTICLE VI.
Officers.

The oflicers shall consist of a President,
two Vice-Presidents, a Secretary, a Treas-
urer, and a Committee of Twelve, elected
by the members, at the annual meeting.

ARTICLE VII.
Duties.

The duties of the Committee shall be to
receive reports of work done, to take
counsel and arrange for fresh work, in ac-
cordance with the Society’s general ob-

jcct; to induce persons tojoin the Society:
to seek out the intemperatc; to watch over
weak members ; and to secure speakers for
the meetings of the Society.

The duties of the Secretary shall be such
as usually appertain to the oflice, and also
to prepare the names of candidates for ad—
mission ; to keep an accurate list of mem-
bers subscribing: to the dilferent Declara—
tions, with their addresses; and to aid in
the circulation of appropriate literature.

ARTICLE VIII.
Meeting/s.

Meetings shall be held monthly. The
business shall be to admit members, to
receive reports. to hear lectures or ad-
dresses, interspersed with singing. The
meetings shall always be opened and
closed with religious exercises.

The Committee of Twelve should meet
in advance of the public meeting.

It will he found of great advantage to
have Bible Classes connected with the
Society7 into which the members should
be drafted as soon as possible after admis—
sion. A Temperance Choir should by all
means he formed.

ARTICLE IX.
Allcmtions and Amendments.

This Constitution may be altered,at any
formal meeting, by the vote of two-thirds
of the members ‘of the Society, or at the
Annual Meeting, by a vote of two-thirds
of the members present; provided, that
no suggestion of any change manifestly
in conflict with the Constitution of the
Church Temperance Society of the Pro-
testant Episcopal Church is to be enter—
tained, or considered in order.
