Aug.7to,‘
My deer Miss Gordon, enclosed official .

I left theheflfiiosel copy of antetter open in ordera

to write you a personal letter inenswer to your last. I commenced it Satur-
day, was interrufired, and begin again todayel thank you for the information
about tl1e Louisiana Constitution.

In ansWer to your question about the choice of speakers for the oonvehp
tiOn I will say that I think I have been treated with all proper courte-
sy; It was at my reouest that Miss Virginia P.Robinson, IVIO BosewoOd,‘
Louisville, was appointed local member of the Program Committee rather than
myself; She is president of the Louisville Suffrage Club; and I felt the
Louisville women had far hotter ideas of whom they would like on the prof
[gram than I would have.- I have given that suggestions I thought would be

» useful about speakers from the state; but I have limited my Suggestions

to those.

And now to turn to that dreadful fielmont pledge. I, like you, was f
_staggered. 'x waited 1:111 I heard from Mrs.Mc()11lloch before whiting an

official letter to any one; and I calculate that the mail tOok a copy of

it to you the very morning you received the.joint reply of MISS Shaw and‘

.Miss Ashley. I hope yen got it in time to know you_did not stand alone
z in your opinnionv of that pledge. I felt myself bound to reply as guarded-i
1y as I oeuld, because the convention is to meet in Louisville, and I
‘am the representative of Ky.on the Board, and courtesy demands that I
" [shall make the situation as pleasant to everybody as I can. In looking o-*
u Iter my letter on that oooasion, I hope I have not , by quoting Miss Ash-
ley' sremark about "five straight votes without conditions" made it possi-
te§%9 for any one to suppoSe that I thought any memberoggségg:§§L§€a§efifif

have accepted such a condition, if she had known it. I’suppoee, too, that

those in-heedquarters justified themselves by expecting Miss Shaw t9
have that clause cancelled.-I have Just received this morning Mys.stew-
art's dignified statement of her position. I cannot thank you too much
for your insistence upon having a clear understanding of the matter. I
eent the enclosed letter to ell\the members on its date, except you and
Mrs. MBCulloch, which I held hack to enclos:e e persdnel. letter. I-eont
MN .MoCulloch's Saturday.Yon wi I]. see ihet you and I hold almost precise-
ly the sane View about the force of the vote which carried headquarters
to Mew York. I have acted on your saying that you knew of no reason why
I Miss Shaw should not be asked about that Washington City pledge of M's.
Belmont's. I em thonoughly tired of not knowing what I em-voting about,
and I tnuld rather risk giving some offense than keep on going on Mn the
dark. I do not quite agree wita vou about Mrs. Belmont's l.ast pl.edge.
though I can see that she might easily have overlooked that she did not
qualifv it in exactly the same mariner as she did the Original pledge. and
th.at she might have meant it simply for a re-iteration of the original
one. I V ) 1

I note what vou say about a secret about the Press work. ' I can one
quelifiedlv say I will keep it secret till you relaese me, if you tell it
to me. tHOugh I know Mrs .Bennatt would ~19 consumed with curioeity. But

I am going to leave it with you whether or not to tell me, for the reason

that the Ky.E.R.A. is the host of the Convention, and I do not wish to
be too much ruffled to enable me to he very courteous to every body on

that occaSion; and because I still have a task in the auditing of the

books which I dread this yeat, though I never did so befbre. Bearing these
two facts in mind, I shall be glad to have any light on the whole sit- _39
nation that you can throw. think alreedy our new rule of sending copies,

'of all official lettere is enablingthe outside members of the Board tc

, stand more confidentlt for at least they_know what their colleagues are.

5.
I received my copy_of your official letter about the S.B.A find too late
to guide my vote about the votes already cast, though I will revoke mine
as Mrs.Stewart has done, if you wish it. I intenfl to tote just as you it
think best about that fund; for I think it woulfl be an injustice to you
if the Board should not respect all the conditions you have promised to
donors. .

I will say I think exsetly as you do about that $504 to Mrs.Boyer.
unless a part of the funu was en haho at the time theses bills were
maae,- that is, before the Washington City convention.

If you object to it. I shall revel e mv vote about paying the note to
the trustees of the Mary.unthony Fund out of the s.s.1.fund. But other-_
wise I think it a good arrangement both for it ang th Laura Bruce tuna.
For at present the Association is in debt for both sums. If we should
send vour fund to California and wn.n, the he atj Ional would still be in fleet.
But if these two notes are paid, and the money sent to California(Which
aoulfi be a necess1«trj oondit ion) and we shoulfi win, then the Hational would
be out of debt. Of course, if the campaign is lost, the money is gone‘
equally either way, and the Association would be in debt. Have you con-
sidered this point? I can see that you may not like it because you may not
feel thsxt you can refer to_the muney as having helped to win the Califbru
his campaign; though with what thought I 1ave yet given that seems to me
a technicality which could be easily overcome. I have about made up my
mind to try to diapose of the Bruce Fund outing my life, rather than keep
it'for a future Ky.oampaign1 but I want to put it to a Winning camyaign.
However, I think you are ent1tled to have your wishes scrupulously regarded;
and I shall 6.0 so,1f I oau_tevoke my vote, which has already gone in.

I suggest to you that if youtare not satisfied with the uayment of that
$504 to hrs. Boyer that ion get a note from the Board to be reutrned to your-”
ffind from the first bequest which comes in. You know one is expected this

fall; and I think your chances are better there than in trying to have it.

i

paid back from the general treasury when there is no money in it, and not“
likely to be soon. I think putting your case before the public in the
Women's Journal ought to be your very last resort, both in justice to

yourself,.anfl for.the good of the future gifts to the Association. The'

slightest hint that the Board dud not respect the conditions promised by

new

the Chairman of the S.B.A. fund would cut off gifts fatally, T think.
Elesse remember me to your‘sisters/

Very cordially yours.
