Mr. F. D. Baker, Sec.,
Virginia—Kentucky Coal COrporation,
Big stone Gap, Va.
Dear Sir:—

Yours of the 22nd inst,,regnrding your hlue frin: w ich
Mr. Bullitt has, at hand. I719 p'r‘c‘oe‘oly confined i: from 211‘. W. 1.
Dixon, who can give him the desired key if it is still in ex—
istence. I am inclined to think that my original report, notes
and papers which I prepared Whilst superintendent of the Land
Eureau of the Kentucky Union Land CO. have all disappeared, brt
I will give you from recollection cone C? the points in regnrn
to it.

Owing to the enormous hOldings or rather claims which
the Kentucky Union Lana Cc. had and the tendency which Lflc
sheriffs of the counties in which the lnnds were sugpcoed to Ii:
had of taxing non—residents out of existence, and furthermore the
sttaCk which was made by the President and Director: of the Hon“
tacky Union Lend Co. On :hc report which I made as to their
holdings in which I unncrcifully condemned a lot of blanket
patents made in 1870~1874 which they had purchased, I fOHDU it
very desirable and indeed almost necessary to make an effort to
locate the old virginis grants in :hnt section of 11a torribtsy,
in order that I might be able to prove what if any lands might
be held under these patents. "*~”

I accordingly hunted up first the Acts creoti ; the
several counties, and their predecessors in that section, A
study of the records at Frankfort left many gaps. I :Lcrefcrc
went over the County Surveyors' books in Lincoln, Fayette, yourboq
Madison, Montgomery, Clark and other counties, all of which had
at some time in their history covered large sections of List moon»
tain country. From these Count] Curveyors' booms I was enabled
to complete many of the gaps which exioted in the records at
Urankfort.

Some of these surveys were never actually patented, ;:4
many of the entries were cipher never corvejcd or ti; 3 rr;;; ucvg
not recorded, although some of :Te surveys, anLngde. call fx:
cornerings on entries which were afterward“ filthefiéwfii “no :1Vro_
fore, their exact location was clues: iAPCopzule ;o lore Miro.

In these various counties I made copies of practically all A? pic
old surveys, nnd‘$¥%fikérlands which lay in Lxu fl untnim LLSLILL ,3
which I :Louth lei there. These defc copied with the :yyc fiber
and there were two or three letter-prese copies of ouch. In sock
set, the surveys as copied on my list were nqucreu serially fa?
each county. I then took tic Government may: on a scale‘%:
practically toomiles to one inch, node tracfin;s of ;;n: section,

 F.D.B. $2

and of course had blue prints made. On these I locatcc the elm
Virginia grants as best I could. The; were referred :c cc Cir ;s}
by the serial number end an initial letter of the county, 3 fur
Bourbon, F for Vayette, M for Hediecn. There were clue located

on theee, as near as I could, the blanket patents issued in 2;;
years 1870~74, and a few other blanket patents of whcee SXiSEgACc
I learned. These were all then transferred to the trdCiiQ, from
which blue prints were made. In this way Jith the key it is cue;
to attain information regarding the locations cf LEeee gr“ L5,

Now as to the locaticns cf the Cl; Virgini; petcnte LL ‘
the ground. I made a trip through that section With my assidtgut
LEI". G. W. Sewell, <71? Jackson. Ix: the lac}; part of .1:; no“: C(lvfl‘i’.

I had a tissue tracingsof certain porticne of :;e rentecny Fiver
territory Jith references to timbers, natural objecte, etc. pulled
far. I am not preyared to state that we found the sctael zinger
corners, although one of Elem was pcintcd cu; tc no at :;: Aunt;
of Rockhcuse Fcrk, but in every case where a natural ctjcct use
called for, such as"a remarkably long rack house”, "a remar.a17e
rock houee", "a place where the creek has changed its coat a",
"where the hills coco close ontc the river", etc., etc., cue: war
located as near as we could without making an actaal survey nit*i~
a few hundred yards of chere I had placed ttc corner cu Lia
map from tke best information which I hen leeu uule to c Luix

‘ before going on LLG ground.

The bulk cf surveys on Rockhcnee Park are I believe
located nith remarkable accuracy, the acne of the series at the
North Fork on the Kentucky River belce R;chhcnee; those 5h the
Kentucky River at and above Rockhcuce Park are most of them ucw
curetely located; tLe same 0n the Line Perk of the Ventuvug, LLd
there I had a most interesting experience. A recicaat ox T'c;
house Pork itself suspected what Sewell can I were cftcr ;zw
locking me straight in the eye told ge List,if cm; one ever Sade
up there attempting ta locate those old vzrgini; grunte, he go 1;
be one cf the party to kill him. We were teen taking cinycr n:
his house. After dinner we confirmed same ether corner: c? icgnc
same patents.

Those on Carre Fork or Lotte creek were not locatem
with any degree of acolrecy, cgftloee c: Troublesome cr Ehcxhcrn
efzahere, their location is taxed upon eaeira_reeerkatle glgcc
hanging rocks, which hum evidently fallen sifice 1i: Hervey nae
made. Its looation is known, eve smartly before I went ::LE Llc
Company, I am told, :ne corner trees were actually standing, L'c
they were cut dcwn by the native; to destroy :Beir eviduuce,

The locations of tie series of jutenio wiich were mace f4
Lke P. D. Feterts, Terriecn fPLS & Co., 305,000 entry, 1?; Jubuu

, Reynolds 126,030 and 50,000 Acre ;ete is, tfie Pickett, fcrelall &
\

 R. D. B. #8
Marshall series and the two Franklin patents aggregati 5 225,000
Acres, were all ltcated on that map with as much accuracy as that
\ could be done. I do not remember whether the Adams and Crew pst~
ents are Shawn or not, but if they were not located an Llut gap
then they were on some other. At any rate they were based on th:
survey of the Kentucky Raver North+MiOdle Parks by MenucnhuIR;
which was the basis for the surveys and patent; in that section.
I regret to state that Judge A. I. J. Cochran recently
rendered a decision as to the Reynolds 126,000 Acres East is
wrong. The tree , the beginning corner of that patent, was
standing a few years ago, and I unnerstand is still Sthhulh3..

I have often estimated that cver $3000.00 0? the zjme c:
my office farce was spent on that 010 blue prlnt, emu 1t saved Lne
Kentucky Union Lane company in taxes alone between $I0,100 awn
$20,000 per annum, My successcr'i fir. charles Henurle age not
value this and ether information which I had collected. Wicn he
left the Company, his SUCCGSBOT, Hr , A. P. Heur;, :cc; Charge.
The cffice was then at Lexirgtcn. Tr. Dixon asked Ac Lb gt :n
Lexington ans help them tu straighten waiters up, which I 010,
but since then everything has been dissipated.

Trusting this information might be of scue value 1c

_ Dear Sir:-
Rsplying to your favar of September 12. 1912,
regarding the trouble on your train near flatware station on
septamber 9th, and in complianon with your request I beg to
advise that as you kndw I was situated in the smoking compart- '
neat car at the time of the disturbance. Shortly after the
I train left Salt Lick 3r practically as leaving there. I noted
thn man, whom you afterwards ejected from the train, going
’ 9&31‘. the door of the smoking eomparment, at which time he '
van going into the main portion of the ear. fihnn Just about
in {refit of the.donr ha fell t0 the floor. rnsgggain anfl wont
‘ on into tha car. Within a very short tins, ndg mare than
three to five minutaa thereafter, I noted you going gust the
flour of the amoking compartment, pulling the man who had ‘ L
fallen there, evidéntly having some irouble in pulling him
with you. About the timq the train was stopped I heard yuu '
say at 1%” twice, at not more oftezi, "Take hold of him, I
Jaok”a but further than that as outlinéd here, I did not see
nor hear. I was not out on the ylatform of the car, and
so far as the flagman ia-eoncerned all I know about the matter
13 that 1 heard you say “take hold of him, Jack”, at least 4 4 .
twice. if not more than twice. I

of the amaking compartment same few of the passengers there

you as to the troubles the other conductars and you yourself
had an& were having with this particular brakeman, and also ’
an to what ths man e49ctefl from the train was saying to you.
but none of which did I personally hear.
_ If this statement is of any advantage to you,
or if you shsuld deaire it made fuller or more camplete as
to any particular point ana will advise me with reference
thereto. 1 will comply with your r&quest so far as my knowl-
