LOCAL MANAGER QMZMWM , /, Z/fl/ May 2nd, 1915
Messrs Harkins & Harkins, 1
Prestonburg, Ky.
Gentlemen:—

We have your favor of recent date relative to the
”Dictaphone” and under separate cover we are sending you complete
catalogue of instruments and other literature that may prove of
interest to you.

IF YOU COULD GET TWO ONE

CENT STAMPS FOR ONE CENT
legitimately, doubtless you would lose no time ordering a substan—
tial supply, thus cutting in half the cost of postage. But do
you realize that postage is onhy ONE FIFTH the cost of a business
letter.

THE DICTAPHONE, used for dictating and transcribing
oust the cost of the other FOUR FIFTHS in the middle. Now, can
you afford to ignore a proposition which effects so great a sav-
ing in your correspondence? Is not this one item alone sufficient
to command your attention and warrant your immediate ivestigation?

Now would it not be much better and easier when the
stenographer was not at her post or someone else was dictating
to her to turn around to your desk grasp the Dictaphone speaking

V tube and dictate as much as you like, as long as you like with
out interruption. This convenience will be more strongly em-
phasized after you have tried the Dictaphone system.

The DICTAPHONE is no longer regarded as an experiment.
On the contrary, it is a proven success as witnessed by the repeat
orders fnom the greatest firms and corporations in the country,
every installation proving a money, time and labor saver.

The lawyer, whose brain is working constantly and who has
not found the right way to unload his ideas, is bound to find his
brain congested half the time. Which means that a good many of your
most valuable ideas never get used. A man's most precious capital
is his initiative force, his creative energy and every smallest
mechanical act which retards the transcription of his rough memos
into permanent form is chains and slavery to him.

This Letter was Dictated to the
“Dictaphone"

 -2 _

. Wouldn't it be a relief if you could just say the words
‘ that cover the thought as far as you have it outlines - — then

forget the whole thing until you later found that spoken memo

neatly typewriten, lying on your desk, ready to be weighed and

sifted and sorted and re—arranged and worked out any time you get

glossed good and ready.

There you have the story of the economy and utility of
the Dictaphone‘ as it fits the professional man. It has equal
advantages for the man who must get through a mass of details,
who must carry on correspondence of any sort, who sometimes
must do his dictating out of hours — — in short for every one
whose time is valuable: but perhaps most especially for the man
who needs to get things out of his system on the jump.

There is only one expense to the purchase of a Dictaphone

‘ outgit in anyone's establishment that is the initial purchase, as
it has proven that these instruments will pay for themselves with
the time saved in from six months to eight months time and then

‘ begin over again to earn money for the office that places
them in their different departments. ,

We have just installed Dictaphones in the offices of
Matthews & Matthews, Attorneys in this City and they are delighted
with them. Messrs Burch, Peters & Connilly, one of the largest
law officeé in the middle west located in this City have been
using them for years and say that they absolutely could not get
along without them. They say that they would have to double
their stenographic force without the assistance of the Dictaphone.
Many other law offices all over the country are using the Diets»
phones and getting splendid results.

It is a hard matter to dilate upon the merits of the
Dictaphone in a letter, but we are trying to point out some of
the features which will make you realize the importance of this
up to date office appliance.

After you once realize the great value of the Bictaphone
to you in your work, its convenience, its time and expense saving
qualities, you will never be without it.

The point that dictation gives in private and with no
restrain as far as speed is concerned is so palpable that it
need not he argues here. The advantage of being in a position '
to dictate the instant you think of it and want to, early and
late, day or night, cannot be over estimated by the busy man.

We would like to prove to you what the Dictaphone is and
what it will do and without incurring any obligation on your part
to purchase we are perfectly willing to instal a complete Dictaphone
out fit in your office . If you kindly write us consenting to
the Demonstration in your own office and advise us where you have
alternating or direct current in your City and if the former the
voltage and number of cycles and if the latter the voltage.

Heping to have the pleasure of provivn, our claims as
noted above and thanking you in advance for, tri l ordér,,we
await your reply with interest, /’ f:)\ , / \J/ a“

ing been forWarded from my home in Richnond, Kentucky.

I certainly regret that you did not try to get me a few indoru’
ments to the petition, which I am reforwaréing to you.

From all I can gather Mr, Saufley, whom you mention in your let—
has entered the legislative race from his county of Lincoln for the ccma
ing August primary: this makes him ineligible for this place Of Collector
of Internal BeVenue.

‘ Will say that the race is between the eighth and eleventh distric
ts, and as Dishman has gettun the indorsement 0f Caleb Powers an avowed
enemy of the Democratic party; if you would like to see a Simonmpure dem—
ocrat get this place, I again beseech you to lend me your aséistance, for
I know that you do not care to see a man get this place that has the in—
dorsement of Caleb Powers, whbm you recall figured quite a bit in the as-
sassination of our lamented Governor, the Hon. William Goebel.

There are 30 counties in the collector's district, and I am gett~
ing petitions from as many of them as I can to beat Mr. Dishman.

my friends fronzahese counties are doing all they can for me, and

. . A . . . .
Will Say that eVen in his county of Knox I have quite a long petition, f
the real democrats in that county do not like that newspaper indorsem‘t
that Dishman had in getting Caleb Powers to him. Please do what you can
for me to beat this man, and I assure you that I will appreciate your efl
forts. Thanking youin advance I beg to remain yours very truly,

I, 3; June 25th, 1913.
Mr Walter S. Harkins,
Prestonsburg, Ky.
Dear Sir:-

Mr Roberts of Johns Creek was down yesterday and wanted
a description of the land owned by I suppose his wife, Elizabeth
on the waters of Johns Cr and containing about 255.5 acres I pro—
mised to send it up to you as soon as the stenographer came in
but to date she has not arrived and I am enclosing a pen and ink
copy which I trust is legible enough to serve the purpose.

The other tracts you mention do not seem to have been
surveyed and in one instance permission was ref-used, so cannot
send data on them.

Yours very truly,

Mr.Walter S.Harkins, PERSONAL
Prestonsburg, Ky.
Dear Mr.Harkins:

Your letter of the 25th inst. received on my
return to Jenkins today. As you doubtless know, our
contract with the Beaver Pond Coal Company extends
until about Dec.lst, 1913, if my recollection is correct.
At the termination of this contract period, it is
the writer's intention to arrange for an extension
of the power circuit from Van Leer, which will give our
Prestonsburg Patrons 24 hourk service.

You will remember that this matter was
discussed in your office at the time of the writer's
last visit to Prestonsburg. I will take the matter
up further with Manager Ice of Van Leer immediately
to see if authority has yet been granted for the exten-
eion.

I am always glad to hear from you and
anxious to take up any matter that would provide bet-
ter service for Prestonsburg. It does seem that

not .
the Beavor Pond Coal Co. is/ inclined to consider very
seriously the wishes of the patrons of nygjflompany.
