Mr. Joseph D. Harkins,
Prestonsburg,
Kentucky.
Dear Mr. Harkins:- '

I have been endeavoring to get an
option or price, if possible, on the Fifth & Broadway
site, but thus far I have been unable to do so, as Dr.
Mullins who has the matter in charge, has been inaccessible.
As soon as I get an Option on this piece, I will write you.

The piece of property at Third and
Chestnut is D86 on Chestnut and 160 on Third. The owners
of this preperty have given en option until the 15th of
June on this, at $140,000. They were in to see me today
and as soon as the option is out, or exercised, they will
let me know at once.

, I am not sure but that this would be
the very best location that can be found. This property
is in the very center of the shopping and theatre district,
and would be an ideal place, and is large enough to
accommodate the size hotel which you have in mind.

Very Truly Yours,

My 7M

Mr. Joseph D. Harkins,
Prestonsburg,
Kentucky.
Dear Mr. Barkins:-

I have just talked to the Representative
of the Owners of the Fifth & Broadway preperty. They
are willing to consider a proposition, 100 on Broadway
by 200 feet deep. They are not willing to make a price
on it, but are willing to consider a reasonable bid, and
after talking with a great many real estate men in Louis-
ville, it seems to be the idea that this property is
worth from $1,500 to $2,000 per foot.

Dr. Mullin, President of the College, is
going to leave here in two weeks from today for a six
months trip around the world, so we will have to get at
him pretty quick if you want to do anything with this.

I am leaving here tomorrow morning for
Princeton, and will be absent for possibly ten days, and
if you will write to Richard, he will take this matter up
and carry out your wishes in regard to it.

From the information I have been able to
get, it seems tie consensus of Opinion, that this is one
of the best locations in town. Really I would prefer
it to Fourth & Broadway, but I do not think it is any
better than the Third & Chestnut.

Awaiting your favors, I am,

Very Truly Yours,

Mr. H. T. Brown,

Dear Sir:-

Previous correspondence relative to 41,000 acres
surveys.

I beg to advice that I have at divers timec at-
tempted to sell the same to the Elkhorn Coal Corporco
tion, but without apparent auccess. Some few days ago
ur. Pendlcton, who is local representat1Ve for the
company, can no relative to the same and indicated
that if we would be willing to cell the same on 3 rea-
sonable basis, he thought he could now arrange a tilde
with his company. I stated to him I was willing to con.
sider the same as to my half interest. but they do
not desire it unless they can acquire the whole of ’
the property, neither will they pay any substantial

‘ price for the same.

Frankly, I am about of the opinion that I would
be willing to sell my half interest to them for a
amall sum, as in my judgment there is grave danger
that when the forfeiture suits are tried. the entire
title will be forfeited, and we would then be the com-
plete looser; in addition to which, you are doubtless
advised that there was a judgment of forfeiture on one
of the tracts many years ago in the Knctt Circuit Court
which judgment was never appealed from.

I would be pleased to have you advice me the
lgwegg price at wwich you would be willing to sell your
half interest in the same, and thai promptly. It is my
judgment that the opportunity now presented is about
the best we will cvar have to sell the cans.

Very truly yours.

Dear Sir:—

I have yours of the 16th, stating that you had received
our proposition for selling the mine of the hentucky Beaver
Colliories and that you do not know just yet as to the
possibility of taking a joint sale of our coal operation and
the coal lands which you own. ‘

I note further that you will advise us in a few days
in regard to the matter of an option for the Jhepin Estate.

This option had better be made out to me, although the lease
could be made direct to the Chepin Estate or to the Conaeny
which they might form.

In looking (ver the map, we feel thst in any eVent both

. the navidson end Clerk leases should come to the Kentucky
Beaver Collieries! inasmuch as it would not be iovsible to
reach oerf of their coal in a somrerciel way vithout havins
the coal underlying these properties.

If the Shapinfishould go ahead, I can foresee a joint
operation betweeruthe two oomuanies which till inks Very
satisfactory errengenents, both from an oucretiig point of
view and should be very satisfactory to you as the leans omner.
It will be vuite important to know Just exactly whet oroperties
you are able to deliv r at this time. It will also be important
to know the relation of these orcperties to oth r coal lying
between Brater Sreek and the Arkansas which you goesibly do not
own. The Ghepin fistete will undoubtedly want a man of that is
proposed to lease to them. whether it is possible to mehe a map of
the desc iptiCDSDT not I do not know but from the exocrienee we
have had in nehinv axon iron the description of our properties,

I would judge that it would be a difficult job.

hr. 3. C. Hthtier is leaving Chicago tonight and will
see you within the next few days and you can tglk over the entire
situatitn with him. If you conclude to give an cation, you might
have him bring it back uith him.

Very truly ycurs,
