i have your letter of Ja;uary 50th. and regret
very much to learn of the death of your mother.

I have read with a great deal of interest the
sufiaestiona you make and the conclusions that you have evi-
dently formed relative to the Kentucky property in which
your father hpd an interest.

I beg to advise thpt all ofl.the, propertiee of
which I have inform tion that your father owned an interest
in consisted of large grants of land by the Commonwealth of
Kentucky. which included within their exteribr bounds a
large number of prior patents. ‘:;:D.:r0yCIty bad a large
potential Valua.and from time to time when I first came into
the office and even before Inmmm into the office my itther
was recommending thut the neiorb.33buld go to the expense
of locating the prior clnins and obtaining their possession
of the property which nonld be held under the gILntS. Under
our Stgtuts. fifteen years actual adverse possession of

:ruqety invests the .tnar claimant with better title then
the record title end. consequently. as each year passed by
occuaied claiflénts perfected their claims and the owners of
the eccrd title loses as to fit t portion which led been in
actual adverse jufififlnbion Eor Acre than fifteen years. some
several years ago. about 1910. if I now recall correctly.
suits more instituted to forfeit the cltins of the tuners to
these largorpdoents Lnd judgment rendered forfeiting them.

Your brother Frank. so Ibr as l have any recol-
lection. or can even ovncoivc, did not obtain any mvney or

substuntial profit from any of these wrapertiea in which your
f ther owned on interest in Kentucky.

It is difficult to explain within thqrjnifiitof
a letter the different legal obstacles in connection with
this erfiCIty; however. i beg to advise thct I l-ve chernl
cases a siting trial befor: the Board of Tax Appeals at
nesliagton. and when these cases are set thdre am over there
I would be glad to explain the matter to you thoroughly.

Dear Joe:

To-day Cities Service Common is worth 47. I have a strong tel-
egram that urges me to get all my clients and prospects in at the
earliest moment. And it also said that the price to-day will look
like a very low price within the next few weeks.

If you or your mother or any of your folks wish to get in, I
can take your order by phone and settle the payment within a day
or two after.

I will be at the Rule Hotel most of the day Wednesday 24th, at
Paintsville - If you should wish to call me, call there. This is
the greatest Opportunity to make a clean-up on stock, I believe,
in the whole U. S.

Mr. Joseph D. Harkins

Prestonsburg, Kentucky

My dear Joe:-

It will be impossible for us to handle the
notes of 0.0. Hays on account of having as mush paper of
Mr. Hays‘ as we care to handle, in other words his direct
and indirect obligations with us are just beyond the limit.

I consider your notes perfectly good outside of
them being secured by lien retained on soda fountain outfit.
Mr. Hays is a hard working fellow, honest, sober and a good
business man, but like a great deal of others, has been hit
hard in the coal business and is still paying for his ex-
perience in that venture.

Trusting that you will be able to handle the
notes some where else and with best wishes, I am

Very truly yours,
Cashie;f7:\\~_7£:.“\\\\\
