REEKS MAKE A WISH

The Greek community comes together
every spring to entertain as well as give back to the
community. Among fraternities and sororities, Greek
Sing is undoubtedly the favorite Greek event held at
UK. Along with the spirited contest, students work
to raise money for a great cause.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Chi Omega host
Greek Sing annually to raise money for the Make A
Wish Foundation. It is a dance competition in simple
terms, but the Greek chapters at UK expect nothing
less than extravagant productions. Many competi-
tors begin practicing months before the event.
putting extensive time and effort into this great
cause.

"Greek Sing is so successful at UK
because it allows every fraternity and sorority to
get involved and showcase their talents to friends
and the community." said Blake Burnett, SAE Greek

Sing chairman in 2007. “It sends a message that
Greeks are capable of uniting for an important
cause and shows the community the impact we can
have when we come together."

Greek Sing 2007, held in Memorial
Coliseum, sold over 5,000 tickets and raised more
than $40,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation, an
organization that grants wishes to children with life-
threatening illnesses. The fraternity Phi Kappa Tau
won overall. In their unique production, they used
rolling chairs, performing several impressive tricks.
Delta Delta Delta won for the sorority divrsion.

Chairmen SAE Blake Burnett and Chi 0
Kate Bunnell organized Greek Sing in 2007. Some
sponsors of the event include Tempur-Pedic,
Kennedy's Bookstore, and Keeneland. Burnett also
said he hopes more Lexrngton businesses will be
involved next year because it offers locals an oppor-

tunity to show their support. Every year the event
contributes more to the Make A Wish Foundation and
never fails to entertain and contribute to the com-
munity.

GROWING EXCITEMENT
FOR UK HOOPS FANS

Anilolyn lohiisim l Kernel PR

A long time favorite of UK

students, UK Hoops' 2007-2008 season
promises to continue the growth and
excitement of the women's basketball
program. Not only can students antici-
pate another hopeful season, but they
can also expect a new face leading the
Wildcats.

This year fans look forward
to the return of a former assistant as
the new head coach for UK Hoops. In
April, Matthew Mitchell was named
head coach after Mickie DeMoss
resigned. DeMoss coached for four sea-
sons and led the program to compete
on a national level.

Last season under Coach
DeMoss the Wildcats finished at 20-14,
the second consecutive ZO-win season
in 15 years. They made it to the third
round of the Women's National
Invitation Tournament. With the build-
ing enthusiasm in the program, the
success of the past few years is only
the beginning of what UK Hoops plans
to accomplish.

"I am excited for Matthew

and for the program. lam confident that
he can continue guiding the program on
the right track with his leadership,"
DeMoss stated in regards to the hiring of
Mitchell on www.ukathletics.com.

Mitchell was an assistant at UK from
2003-05, and also held positions at
Tennessee and Florida. Previously he was
the head coach at Morehead State where
he drastically improved their record with-
in only two years.

“i am extremely honored to be the
coach at Kentucky," Mitchell said during
the press conference announcing his hir-
ing. "I’m just excited to have the opportu-
nity to lead the program and continue
building a championship-caliber team.”

With the growing program and a new
coach that knows how UK Hoops works, it
is no surprise that UK students chose
women's basketball as one of their
favorite sports. The 2007-08 season will
surely be a significant year for UK Hoops.

The Wildcats play at Memorial
Coliseum. The schedule for the upcoming
season should be posted soon. Look for it
on ukathetics.com.

Lexington's largest independent new and
used CD store. CD Central, has been fulfilling our
every musical need since 1995. Their eclectic
selection ranges from Indie rock to bluegrass, from
country to jazz.

So what puts CD Central a cut above the rest?
Owner Steve Baron says, “I think Ull students are
becoming a little more hip to what the local com-
munity has to offer. It's all about supporting local
businesses that are in the campus area and down-
town." Their loyalty to music and music alone is
what separates CD Central from other stores that
just happen to have a music section.

Located at 377 S. Limestone, CD Central
caters to Lexington's locals. Being independent
means that the store is locally owned and on any
given day you can stop by and speak to the owner
face to face, something you don't get from national

dent store. CD Central puts an emphasis on selling
music that’s put out by independent labels and
played on independent radio stations like WRF L. In

a sense they are independent from corporate influ-

ence. They don't play or sell music because they
are told to; they play and sell it because it's good
music.

Don't let the store‘s size fool you; CD
Central has an extensive CD collection. Compared
to other “music" stores. they may not look like
they have more to offer but consider this. Larger
stores have many copies of a couple CDs; whereas
CD Central has a couple copies of many CDs.

Also, don't let the name deceive you.
There is more to CD Central than just CDs. The

store also carries the largest selection of new vinyl

in Lexington. With no exaggeration, they have the
largest poster collection in the state. In addition,

is still and will always be muSic.”

CD Central also provides live music. On
average, they host in-store concerts about twice a
month. They have any kind of musician perform;
anywhere from punk rock to individual singer song
writers. They also help put on concerts around
town like the free 4th of July concert downtown.

With a wide selection and a staff of
music enthusiasts. CD Central is undoubtedly the
best music store in Lexington; and apparently you
agree.

BEST HAN
TOSSED PIZZA!

if you are a UK
student and have gotten
through four years of col-
lege without eating at
Pazzo's, then there is
something wrong! This pub
and pizza eatery is located
on UK’s campus and has
been around since 2000
and UK students have been
enjoying it ever since!

What makes
Pazzo's so unique from
other pizza places is the
attention to what goes into
the pizza. They take no
short cuts at Pazzo's! The
signature marinara sauce
and dough are made fresh
daily. The meat they use is
the highest quality and the
vegetables are fresh cut
daily. Pazzo's also uses
Wisconsin made 100%
whole milk mozzarella,
parmesan, and romano

cheeses to top their dishes.
And, if you go to their web
site you'll see their motto,
"To prepare and bake our
pizzas takes a little longer,
but the extra few minutes
is well worth the wait. It is
with pride that Pazzo's
serves you!”.

Pazzo’s has awe-
some deals on pizzas- they
have specialty pizzas or
you can create your own.
and with over 28 different
pizza toppings that should
not be a problem! Also, on
weekdays they offer
"jumbo slice specials"
where you order a jumbo
slice of pizza (and these
really are HUGE) and pay
only a couple of bucks for
it. Sundays (between 12
and 3) are even cheaper
with a jumbo slice of
cheese pizza for only $1.00!

With pizza deals like these.
there may be a shortage of
“poor college kids" on UK's
campus!

Everyone would
agree that Pazzo's is a
pizza jomt, but they have
many other delicious
entrees. From fresh salads
to hoagies (and everything
in between) Pazzo’s satis-
fies anyone's taste buds.

If you are really
hungry. you can order the
mezzaluna- a mix between
a calzone and a pizza, and
it's only served in one
size...Large.

Not only does
Pazzo’s have a great selec-
tion of eats, but they also
have an extensive bar
menu. Pazzo's has 39
beers on tap and every
Wednesday beginning at
6:30 PM they have "pint

night" where a special beer
is put on tap for the
evening. lf you order a
pitcher of this beer, you’ll
receive two beer glasses
from that brewery to take
home. Pazzo's also has
daily pint specials- every
day of the week! Just visit
their webSIte to see what’s
on tap this week.

Pazzos’ is locat~
ed near the corner of Euclid
and S. Limestone near
downtown Lexington and
UK's campus. Parking can
be found at the rear of the
building. You can also Visit
them on the web at

The votes are In and UK’s preferred chorce for
coffee: Starbucks, of course!

We all know a little bit of the coffeehouse lingo:
"Double tall, non-fat, extra hot, no foam, vanilla latte". or
maybe, “venti, no whip, mocha frappuccmo light.”

If you know what those words mean, you're like-
Iy an loyal Starbucks customer and coffee lover, and you've
probably visited one of the many local Starbucks Coffee
stores.

In fact, most of us can't live without our cat-
feine fix. Whether it's a latte, a regular cup of joe, a sweet
blended coffee drink or a refreshing cup of tea. Starbucks
sets the bar when it comes to pick-me-ups. On top of the
products being top-notch and prepared with care, it's
always nice when your drink comes with a smile from one
of the friendly Starbucks employees.

One of the four UK campus Starbucks are also
great places to focus on homework or meet friends for an
afternoon snack and study session.

The campus locations are in the Student Center,
UK Clinic, Commons and Young Library.

FIND CULTURE IN THE FINE ARTS

VVhlIth‘y Hale l ( untrilmting \A’ritt-r

Moving into your new residence in Lexington, you will
quickly realize that the community is full of history and
charm as well as Southern hospitality. basketball mania
and horse racing. Likewise. Lexington is rich in cultural
activities and events, including an ever-growing arts scene.
While Lexington offers you a number of varied options of
its own, don't forget the wealth of fine arts resources at
your fingertips at the University of Kentucky.

UK is home to thriving programs in art, music
and theatre. It has various venues showcasing student.
faculty and visiting talent including the UK Art Museum,
Barnhart Gallery. Briggs Theatre, Guignol Theatre.
Memorial Hall, Rasdall Gallery, Singletary Center for the
Arts and the Tuska Center for Contemporary Art. As a stu-
dent you can take in an art exhibit, concert, opera or play
for a reasonable discounted price, or many times for free.

The UK Department of Art has developed a rep-
utation as a national leader in new approaches to the cre-
ation. interpretation, and history of art and educating
artists, teachers, and future leaders in the field. Art stu-
dents exhibit work at UK's Barnhart Gallery as well as vari-
ous community galleries throughout the year. Student and
faculty shows at the campus galleries are free and open to
the public. The Department of Art also showcases
advanced work by students graduating with a Masters of
Fine Arts and new artists from around the globe at the
Tuska Center for Contemporary Art. Possibly one of the
most exciting events you can enjoy as a student at UK is
the program’s Open Studio. This annual event is held just
before Christmas and gives students and the Lexington
community an opportunity to start their own art collec-
tions by showcasing and selling works by UK's budding
artists and popular artists and faculty.

The UK School of Music is one the university’s

programs designated as an Area of Excellence. The school
has achieved awards and national recognition for high-cal-
iber education in opera, choral and instrumental music
performance as well as for music education, composition,
theory and music history. Similarly, the faculty has gained
national and international prominence in their respective
fields. Students, faculty and guest artists at the School of
Music present around 200 concerts, recitals and public lec-
tures each year at the Singletary Center for the Arts and
other campus locations. The UK Opera, Symphony
Orchestra. Wind Ensemble and Men's and Women's Choirs
