ADOLPH RUPP I have heard "Great Moments" many times and every time it gives me additional thrills. You will never realize the great memories that are recorded for you in this record and I believe everyone will get tremendous thrills in reliving these great evenings.
CAWOOD LEDFORDThere were no notes or lists of questions. The only thing we had was a list of game tapes which were coming up next. Rupp didn't have a single note, and yet he was right every time.
JOE CALDWELL, Lexington LeaderThe idea for the record originated nearly a year ago and it has taken a dozen people 10 months to put it together. It has been done by the Committee of 101 not because the Committee wanted a money-making project for this year, but just a basketball related project to concentrate on. Now it looks as if they have struck a gold mine.
MIKE MERSCH, Ky. Post & Times StarThe record is an invaluable page in history. It captures the highlights and the disappointments of a career that may never be equaled.

GOVERNOR LOUIE B. NUNN, the Commonwealth' chief executive and chairman of the Board of Trustees, believes strongly that self-reliance, pride and courage are the by-products of intercollegiate athletics. His interest in Kentucky basketball was emphasized when he presented his first "Governor's Trophy" to Wildcat Coach Adolph Rupp. Gov. Nunn, 45, is a native of Barren County. He attended Bowling Green Business University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville, where he earned a law degree in 1950. He is an avid sportsman and spectator and a successful attorney who has served in both executive and judicial positions. The third Republican this century to be elected Governor in Kentucky, he formerly served as a county judge and city attorney.
K
PRESIDENT OTIS A. SINGLETARY came to Lexington from the University of Texas, Austin, where he was executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Dr. Singletary, who is eighth president of the University, served a total of eight years at Texas, progressing during seven (1954-61) of those years from instructor to professor, associate dean of Arts and Sciences and assistant to the president. Then for five years (1961-66), he was chancellor of the University of North Carolina, although he was on leave from October 1964 to January 1966 to serve as director of the Job Corps, Office of Economic Opportunity.
K
ATHLETICS DIRECTOR HARRY C. LANCASTERMissing from the University of Kentucky basketball bench this season is the familiar figure of Harry C. Lancaster, who stepped up as athletic director late last season after being associated with Adolph Rupp since 1946. Lancaster remained as Rupp's chief assistant until last season's end and then left the coaching ranks to concentrate on the complex job of running the Wildcat athletics program. A native of Paris, he is a graduate of Georgetown College with a master's degree from the University of Kentucky. MEMBERS OF THE BOARDG uiding the UK othletics program are board members (seated, left to right) Dr. Glenwood L. Creech, Dr Ralph Angclucci, Dr. A. D. Kirwan, athletic director Harry C. Clay Maupin is treasurer.
Kentucky's athletic program, a well-balanced and ambitious activity featuring intercollegiate competition in ten different sports, is organized under the Department of Athletics and a corporation known as the University of Kentucky Athletics Association.
The program is conducted without overemphasis or sacrifice of educational objectives and in strict compliance with the rules of the University, the Southeastern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
A board of directors, headed by the President of the University in the capacity of chairman, maintains overall policy supervision of the athletic program. In addition to the UK President, board officials include the Vice-President for Student Affairs as vice-chairman and Dr. W. L. Matthews in the capacity of scretary. Fourteen other men drawn from the University faculty and the general public also serve on the board as appointees of the president as does a student representative.
Supervising the steady growth and balanced development of the athletic program is Director of Athletics Harry C. Lancaster.

RUPP BEAT OUT 69 APPLICANTS FOR UK JOB
By TED LAUDEMAN
Courier-Journal and Times Staff Writer
Carey Spicer was excited and a little nervous as he walked across the University of Kentucky campus on a fall day in 1930. He was on his way to meet UK's new basketball coach.
Spicer had played two seasons under quiet, conservative Johnny Mauer. Now Mauer was gone. He had resigned a few months before to accept a higher paying job at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
UK fans wondered if the Kentucky athletic council hadn't made a mistake in not matching the Miami offer. Mauer had taken over after a season in which UK had won only two games and had produced three straight winning teams. His last team, in 1929-30, had won 1 6 of 19 games.
There was no scarcity of applicants for Mauer's UK job. He quit immediately after the basketball season and within two weeks 70 coaches had applied. By the middle of April the list was trimmed to 10 and after interviewing the remaining candidates, Athletic Director S. A. (Daddy) Boles was sure UK had the man it wanted.
He was a 29-year-old high school coach from Freeport, III., teams had won more than 80 per cent of their games over a four-year period. He had been a senior guard on Dr. Forrest (Phog) Allen's unbeaten University of Kansas team in 1923.
Got 2-Year Contract
On May 21 the announcement was made that Adolph Frederick Rupp had been signed to a two-year contract as head basketball coach, reserve football coach and assistant to Bernie Shively with the track team.
It was a more momentous day than anyone could have realized, not only for UK but for basketball throughout the south.
One of Rupp's first acts after setting up shop at UK was to send for Spicer, captain-elect of the basketball team.
As he shook hands with Rupp, Spicer saw a man about equal to his own 6-foot-1 in height, already a bit on the portly side.
As Spicer recalls, Rupp told his team captain of plans to install a fast break offense, which was a radical change from Mauer's deliberate style. Set patterns would be retained, Rupp assured Spicer, but when possible UK would run.
It was a style Rupp would never change in winning 24 Southeastern Conference titles and four National Collegiate Athletic Association championships on the way to becoming basketball's winningest coach.
Sale on Rupp's First Team
Rupp questioned Spicer carefully about returning players and the senior from Lexington painted an encouraging picture. Paul McBrayer, the All-American guard, and Lawrence (Big) McGinnis were gone, but among those back were 6-4 center George Yates and clever Louis (Little) McGinnis, along with such promising sophomores as 6-4 Forrest (Aggie) Sale and rugged Ellis Johnson, a high school All-American from Ashland. Spicer, himself, had made all-America one season under Mauer.
Rupp's first game was a runaway victory, 67-19, over Georgetown as the coach unveiled his fast-breaking attack. Sale led the scoring with 19 points and McGinnis had 17. Other starters were Bill Trott of Evansville, Johnson and Spicer.
Other UK players in Rupp's first victory were Jake Bronston, Vernon Congleton, Walter Crump, Allan Lavin, George Skinner, Cecil Beil, Charlie Worthington, Bill Kleiser, Ercel Little and Bud Cavana. Lavin, known as "Doc," now is racing director at Churchill Downs.
Georgetown had little to offer in the way of offense, but a husky guard, Harry Lancaster, scored 10 points. Eighteen years later, when Rupp was well along the way to becoming the winningest coach in college basketball, Lancaster would become Rupp's first full-time assistant, and then eventually take over as UK's director of athletics. amp

Does a store have to put on a side show
to get attention?
Electronic sounds? Knock-em-
Must there be psychedelic lights? dead decor?
Or can't it just be a nice place to shop. With lots of handsome clothes. To see. To try. To buy.
With great men's clothes, for example. In many more than one measly size. Plus lots of exclusives. Which does guarantee one a certain measure of individuality. Isn't that enough?
Or must all salespeople be strictly under 25? Can't there be a judicious mix of people? There is something to be said for the older man, you know. He's awfully savoy about wlmt to wear, where and when. And can save you time, money.
Now maybe all this sounds fuddy-duddy. But you'd be surprised at how much noise the quiet approach generates. Not ear-splitting, to be sure. But more enduring than the here today, gone tomorrow razzmatazz.
To see the quiet one in action, come to Graves, Cox . . . downtown and in Turfland.

'Nation's Winningest Basketball CoacK" (39 YearsWon 810, Lost 17582.2%!
The induction of Adolph Rupp into the Nai-smith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last spring in Springfield, Mass., was fitting tribute to a man whose name is synonymous with college basketball.
Known as "Der Baron of Basketball," "The Man in a Brown Suit," and various other names of distinction, Rupp has reaped honor upon honor during 39 years as coach of the world famed Wildcat cage teams.
He is the undisputed winningest coach of all time with 810 victories against only 175 defeats and is one of basketball's most popular clinic and after-dinner speakers.
The name of Rupp, feared and respected in opponents' hearts and beloved by the millions who have witnessed the remarkable success of his Wildcat cage teams, has become synonymous with the game of basketball.
Such unprecedented recognition for the fabulous mentor is only natural since his success in the past 39 years as head man of the fab!ed Kentucky cage thoroughbreds has been nothing short of phenomenal. It would take a book longer than his own technical best-seller, "Championship Basketball," to recite the record completely. Briefly, however, that record, in addition to Hall of Fame membership, includes:
An amazing 810 victories out of 985 starts for an unparalleled winning percentage of better than 82.2 percent against major competition.
Certification by the NCAA Service Bureau as the nation's most successful collegiate basketball coach, both for the decade ending in 1961 and at the 20-year level.
Selection as the unanimous national "Coach of the Year" in 1966 for the fourth time in his career and runner-up for the 1957 and 1964 seasons.
Honored in 1967 by Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club as "Coach of the Century."
Four NCAA Tournament championships picked up by
his Wildcats who hold the all-time record of 17 appearances in the national classic and can claim more victories in NCAA play (28) than any other team. Coach of the International Universities Tournament
champions in 1966. A nominal world championship as co-coach of the successful USA entry in the 1948 Olympic Games which included members of Kentucky's NCAA champions. Producer of more Olympic gold medallion winners (7)
than any other cage coach. An all-time record total of 24 Southeastern Conference
titles since the league was organized in 1933. Election to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959 and previous selection (in 1946) by Helms Athletic Foundation as a member of their exclusive Hall of Fame. Trustee and member of selection and honors committees of Basketball Hall of Fame. Also chairman NABC Hall of Fame Committee and heads the group that selects players to appear in East-West All-Star Game benefitting the Hall of Fame. Recipient of the Governor's Medallion in 1959 for meritorious service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky and plaques of appreciation from the U.S. Air Force (1959) and Sugar Bowl committee (1951). Election to the Kentucky Hall of Fame (1945), outstanding citizen of Lexington (1949) and twice honorary citizen of the City of New Orleans. Enrolled in the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1965. Chosen "Deltasig of the Year" for 1966 by the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Phi, professional fraternity in commerce and business administration. Development of more All-Americans (25 players honored 36 times) and more material for the pro ranks (26) than any other coach. Five Sugar Bowl Tournament championships, a National Invitation Tournament title and 1 1 trophies from the 16 previous UK Invitational Tournaments. Membership on the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee. More overseas clinic trips (seven to Europe, three to the Far East, and one to the Near East) for U.S. Government than any other coach. Also visited Alaska in 1968.
Selected as an official goodwill ambassador to the 1968
Olympics in Mexico City representing the National
Association of Basketball Coaches. Election to Kansas Hall of Fame. SEC coach-of-the-year again in 1968. Honored as Outstanding Kentuckian by Southeastern

153-155 EAST MAIN STREET AND TURFLAND MALL ASSISTANT COACH JOE B. HALLFormer Wildcat basketeer Joe B. Hall enters his fifth season on the staff of Coach Adolph Rupp and is destined to play a strong role in the Wildcat program, present and future. The 40-year-old native of Cynthiana took over the freshman team late last season when Harry C. Lancaster moved up to athletic director and began easing out of the coaching scene. In addition to the frosh, Hall inherits the position of good, strong right hand to Rupp, the world's winningest basketball coach. A successful coach for nine years prior to joining the Rupp staff in July, 1965, as coach,-scout and recruiter, Hall transferred from Central Missouri State, where he spent the 1964-65 season as head coachposting a 19-6 record and gaining CMS's first MIAA Conference championship since 1951. Hall entered coaching following graduation from UK in 1955. He spent two years at Shephardsville High, achieving Coach of the Year honor in the Mid-Kentucky Conference in both 1957 and 1958. Moving into the collegiate field, he served one season as freshman coach and then five years as head coach at Regis College in Denver, Colo.

ASSISTANT COACH T. L. PLAINThe newest member of the Wildcat staff, Plain joined Coach Rupp in July and is no stranger to the UK scene, having served as a graduate assistant after leaving Kentucky Wesleyan College to work on an advance degree here in 1963-64. At Wesleyan, the 43-year-old Navy veteran compiled a 63-34 won-loss record while serving as athletic director, coach and associate professor of physical education from 1959-63. A native of Sacramento, Ky., he received his B.S. at Western Kentucky University and later attended Murray State, Indiana University and UK. He was athletic director, teacher and coach at Breckinridge County High from 1949-53; teacher, athletic director and coach at Henderson City High from 1953-57, and teacher and coach at Lincoln High in Vincennes, Ind., from 1957-59. Plain returned to Vincennes in 1964 as director of physical education for the Community School Corp. and basketball coach at Lincoln High. He left there in 1967 to become assistant basketball coach and assistant coordinator of the student teaching program at the University of Louisville.
ASSISTANT COACH DICK PARSONSA former Wildcat baseball All-America, Parsons had the distinction of serving as captain of both the UK basketball and baseball teams in 1961. He returned for post-graduate studies last winter and helped scout basketball foes. He joined UK as baseball coach in the summer and was added to Rupp's basketball staff with recruiting and scouting duties.
TRAINER CLAUDE VAUGHANNamed two years ago to the Wildcat staff was 35 -year-old native Kentuckian Dr. Claude Vaughan, who took on the vital responsibilities of caring for the mental and physical health of UK players.
