l 1- Throughout the 1981-82 basketball season, the Southeastern Conference has been ,,
‘ S acclaimed as the toughest in the nation. For much of the season, five of the SEC’s 10 teams U,
”’ have been ranked in the top 20, and three have made appearances in the po||’s Top 10. g
*“ This fine reputation is a good start as the conference completes its first full season of *
é league play. Prior to this season, two conference tournaments were held, but it was state ,*3*
y , conference tournaments that determined which teams advanced to post—season play. Now, O
l 8 under the new NCAA structure, the SEC tournament winner is the automatic qualifier to Z,
w regional play. 3
* In its first season as a league, the SEC divided its teams into Eastern (Kentucky, ,,
3 Tennessee, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Florida) and Western (Auburn, Alabama, Louisiana ,,,
Z State, Mississippi and Mississippi State) divisions. Each team was required to play the other g
O four teams in its division home and away during the regular season. *
gg In the first Southeastern Conference Tournament——he|d at Tennessee in 1980-the host 2
,, Lady Vols took the championship with an 85-71 victory over Mississippi. Last year at LSU, O
8 Auburn captured the second crown by defeating Alabama 60-51. Z)
