in the Reference Department.
I SELA Conference U
I The Southeastern Library Association Brennial Conference was held November 20-22, 1980,
'· in Birmingham, Alabama. Among the 1100 registrants for this conference, which marked
,‘ the 60th anniversary of SELA, were John Bryant, Vivian Hall, and Jane White from UK.
{ The Resources and Technical Services Librarian Section was held on November 20 from
; 2-4:30 p.m. The three speakers for the afternoon program addressed AACR 2 issues.
A - The Program title was "Count down to AACR2", the first speaker Arlene Taylor Dowell,
W University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill presented her very detailed study of the
H effects of implementing AACR 2 upon a large, a medium, and a small academic library.
V Berna Heyman, College of William and Mary gave a paper on just how William and Mary
J planned to implement AACR 2 using their present Card Catalog. John Bryant, University
E of Kentucky presented a paper which gave the impact of AACR 2 on a larger research
A library if the option for the Catalog format were COM, a cost model for the COM product
Q Aga; also part of the presentation.
1 , _ .
Q During the Conference John attended a very important meeting on the Future of SOLINET.
V Lee Handly, Executive Director for SOLINET presented a proposal for membership consideration;
J i.e., the best possible benefit to the SOLINET user's might be setting up what he called a
M 5 Mutual Support Corporation, between SOLINET and OCLC. This would include giving up all of
Q SOLINET'S assets to the Corporation. More information on this will certainly be forthcoming.
H
% Edwin Newman, the dinner speaker at the Thursday evening banquet, described the demise of
V the English language in contemporary usage.
1
g The program for the Special Libraries luncheon featured an excellent slide—tape presenta-
H tion on the Reynolds Historical Library in Birmingham. . ‘
Q Fred Glazer of the West Virginia Library Commission discussed the need to promote your li-
€_ brary in his "Promote or Perish" address. Mr. Glazer has been successful in his efforts to
E increase financial support for West Virginia's libraries in recent years.
% SELA is thinking of sponsoring a charter plane to go to the American Library Association
Q Conference in San Francisco this sum er. The price, as estimated at this time would be
E $723. per person. This fee would include roundtrip airfare between Atlanta and San
Q Francisco, transportation to and from the hotel, and double occupancy for 6 nights at the
Q Holiday Inn.
