INFORMATION FROM THE PRESERVATION COMMITTEE
a Fluctuations in temperatures are undesirable because many library materials I
L are made up of several component materials that absorb heat and expand at
different rates.
Heat is a treacherous agent of deterioration. We cannot see library materials
expanding and contracting nor can we see chemical reactions occuring. The
I results, _however, are all too obvious—»brittle paper, cracked and warped
leather bindings and flaking photographic images.
The rate of deterioration can Significantly be reduced by lowering temperatures.
Library materials stored at 70 F will deteriorate approximately half as fast
as library materials stored at 790 F.
