INTOTRAC UPDATE
The Information Access Company has renamed its InfoTrac product the
General Periodicals Index. The database, available in the King Library
Reference Department, has also been split into to versions: the Academic
Library Edition (the version in Reference) and the Puhfie Library Edition.
The Academic Library Edition has recently been expanded by 235 journals,
191 of which cover the social sciences, humanities and general sciences. An
updated list of the titles now included in the database is available for
viewing by the InfoTrac terminals or at the Reference desk To receive a copy
of the list, or for further information, call Judy S okett, Reference
Department, 7-1830.
PC LEARNERS GROUP
The library PC Learners' Group met on Thursday, June 30, to discuss future
directions for the group and to plan programs for the fall semester. The
sessions for the fall will be "Getting to Know Your PQ", September 21;
"Introduction to DOS", October 19; "Advanced DOS", No#ember 36, and "General
Principles of Word Processing", December 14. There will be a session on
dealing with hard disks in January.
Beginning with the next issue of the GE, we will begin listing collections
of public domain software owned by library staff members that are available
for borrowing and copying. Please let either Phil Starter or Bonnie Cox know
if you have software that you can legally share with others and which you feel
would be of interest or use.

 OPTICAL SCANNER AVAILABLE
The Computing Center now has a Kurzweil character scanner available for
general use in the Micro Lab in Room 107 of McVey Hall. The scanner is
attached to an IBM AT and converts text into an ASCI file which can then be
imported into word processing programs. It is relatively easy to use for most
applications. If you have a project you would like to scan, check with the
consultant in the Micro Lab to reserve time by calling 7-2207. For more
information, call either Lavine Thrailkill at 7-2257 or Brenda Ghaelian at
7-2203.
SOLINET COMPUTER WORKSHOPS
There are two Solinet-sponsored computer workshops scheduled for July 19
and 20 at Jefferson Community College in Louisville. The workshop on July 19
will cover shareware for IBM and compatible computers. The progran1 will
explain the proliferation of shareware, how to obtain it, provide lists of
shareware and offer hands-on use and evaluation of shareware software
products. Cost of the workshop is $60;0O `
The July 20 workshop, entitled "Troubleshooting and Maintenance for the
PC" will cover diagnosis of problems, maintenance and warranty options, when
to do repairs yourself and when to send it out, and hands on "first aid" on

 I ADVANCED CONSERVATION WORKSHOPS
The University of Iowa will be offering three one-week workshops this fall
and winter which will offer specialized training to individuals with prior
experience in book conservation techniques. The workshops planned are
"Valuable Pamphlet Collections", October 3-7; "Nineteenth—Century Cloth Case
Bindings", November 28—December 2, and "Enclosures for Books and Pamphlets",
February 20-24.
The workshops are limited to four persons each. A stipend of $350 will be
provided to each person selected for the workshops to help with travel and
living costs. V

NEW YORK STATE LIBRARY RESEARCH RESIDENCY AWARDS
The New York State Library and the New York State Bicentennial Commission
are offering residency awards of up to $3,500 for research conducted at the
New York State Library that will promote the use of the Library's collections.
· Special consideration will be given to projects that will result in a
project that will improve access to the State Library's collections or broaden
the public interest in constitutional history.
