This year, 350 shofarot kits were distributed to Jewish schools and synagogues across the former Soviet Union as part of the holiday activities planned by The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The kits included a shofar, shofar cover and a special booklet prepared by JDC on the background and symbolism of the shofar. Every schoolchild will also receive three colorful explanatory booklets on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. produced in Russia. For the first time, students of the JDC Moscow Cantorial Academy will be conducting High Holiday services at the Moscow Choral Synagogue. Until now, cantors were brought in from Israel to conduct the High Holiday services.
