Report #11 to their collection of OCLC Reports on videotape. The
new Report deals with OCLC's New Telecommunications Network as
well as their Project ADAPT. It also features a look at one of
the West Coast's largest reference centers, the Pasadena Public
Library, and how it uses EPIC.
Other tapes in this series which King Tech Services has in its
collection include OCLC Reports #3-10 plus a special interview
with OCLC founder, Fred Kilgore, and the EDUCOM 87 Keynote Ad-
dress by John Sculley.
Generally, these tapes run about thirty minutes in length. Any

THANKS FROM CLIS
The following letter was received by Paul Willis from Dean Thomas
waldhart of the College of Library and Information Science:
I’ve come to the end of my second year as acting dean of the
College and I want to take some time to formally thank you, and
you staff, for everything that you have done for the College over
the years. At many universities throughout the country the rela-
tionship between the graduate library school and the library ·
system is more adversarial than mutually supportive. That is not
the case at the University of Kentucky, and I believe that is
largely because you and your staff have always been actively
involved in the master‘s program. Without question, our educa-
tional program is stronger because of that interest and support
and we hope that the college has been able to give a little back
to the library system as well.
The library system’s contribution to the College is most evident
in the contributions of your staff to our instructional program-
over the last two years 13 staff members have brought their spe-
cial expertise to the college as instructors. Taking their prof-
essional experience into the classroom adds a dimension to our
program which would be difficult to duplicate with full-time
faculty who sometimes lose direct contact with professional prac-
tice. Certainly the students recognize and appreciate greatly
this aspect of our educational program and I believe that it
represents a real program strength. At the same time, many pro-
fessional staff in the library system have monitored professional
field experience for our students (also a highly valued educa-
tional experience). Finally, the professional staff of the lib-
rary system contribute directly to the educational program
through collection development work and by working with indivi-
dual students in classroom related activities (e.g., this is
especially true in courses which require students to actively use
the information resources available in the library system--while
2

we ask students to minimize their time demands on the profes-
sional staff, I know that a great deal of learning takes place at
the point of use and that it is your staff that does the teach-
ing).
I am looking forward to the introduction of UKl00, Introduction
to Information Resources, in the Fall. I think that the course
has a great deal of potential for making the university library a
more visible and important part of the undergraduate's education-
al experience. In addition, over the next couple of years I am
hopeful that the College can take a more active role in develop-
ing more numerous and varied continuing education opportunities
for the academic library community.
In short, we much appreciate all that you have done for the li-
brary school and look forward to working with you in the future.
ARL TRAINING SKILLS INSTITUTE
The Association of Research Libraries will be holding a Training
Skills Institute in Atlanta, GA, July 31-August 3. The host for
the institute will be Emory University's Woodruff Library. The
three-and-a-half-day institute is designed to provide a concep-
tual framework for the provision of training, as well as methods
and techniques to carry out the work. with this knowledge and
these skills, library staff can make better judgements about what
kinds of training will have a significant impact on library oper-
ations. This program will also allow them to form the basis of
an inhouse training program at their home institution.
This process is designed for library professionals responsible
for training or for determining staff training needs. These
include supervisors, personnel officers, systems office staff,
and BI instructors. Topics to be studied include: Learning The-
` ory and Practice, Training Design and Delivery, Conduct of Learn-
ing Events, and Evaluation and Follow-Up. Participants will have
an opportunity to develop and deliver a training program in an
ARL member library. The projects will be chosen from a variety
of topics which reflect the needs and interests of the library
staff and participants.
Cost for the Institute is $425.00, not including travel or hous-
ing. Delta Airlines has agreed to give participants 40% dis-
counts off roundtrip airfare. For additional information, con-
tact the Training Assistant, Office of Management Services, As-
sociation of Research Libraries, 1527 New Hampshire Ave., N.w.,
washington, D.C. 20036 (202-232-8656).
