i Survey of UK Library instruction completed:
i An extensive evaluation effort has just been completed in an
; attempt to judge the effectiveness of the freshman English
library instruction program. Questionnaires were given to a
sample of the second semester freshman English students
A (English 102) and the Business English students (English 203).
2 In each of these courses, the students use the Taming of the
Q, Dinosaur booklets, and then undergo an instructional tour of
( the library to help them on the required research paper.
Of those responding, 96% indicated that they used the library
at least once a month. 32% of these students noted that they
, used the library once a week or more.
When asked about the most frequent difficulties encountered
· in library research (more than one problem area could be
checked), 47% noted that needed books were already checked
out to other people and 42% complained that the books were
neither on the shelves nor checked out. 41% of the students
had trouble locating the periodical issues that they wanted
for their research.
But, despite these troubles (many of which are common to any
large research library), an overwhelming majority of the students
felt that the instructional tours were valuable. 94% indicated
that they felt tours are an effective way to learn about
the library and 91% declared that library instruction should
continue to be a part of the freshman English program.
