MINU'ES OF THE UNIVERSITY FACULTY, OCTOBER.12, 1964

The University Faculty met in the Student Center Theatre at
p.m., Monday, October 12, 1964. Chairman Weaver presided.

The minutes of September 16, 1964 were approved as circularized.

Dr. Hilliam F. Wagner, Chairman of the Calendar Committee, presented

the Calendars for 1965—66 and 1966-67 which had been circulated to the
teaching faculty prior to the meeting and recommended their approval.
Out of discussion which followed a number of points were raised against
the continuance of the present calendar, namely,

the disadvantages of completing the fall semester before the
Christmas holidays far outweigh the advantages

the doubt that good students approve of the present calendar
its interference with professional meetings

the difficulty of attracting good graduate students

its interference with the faculty recruitment program

it is out of phase with the Graduate School residence
requirements and the use of national testing agencies, e.g.,

foreign language examination

the hardship imposed on the professional schools on campus
because of the successive day class scheduling

Motion was made and approved by the Faculty that the proposed Calendars
be sent back to the Calendar Committee for revision, and consideration
in that revision of return to the calendar that obtained prior to the
present one; and further, that the Committee prepare a calendar on the
old principle and bring it to the University Faculty for consideration
at its next meeting.

Motion was made and approved to adopt the following proposed change
