The writing of a foreword is always challenging. Indeed,
it is an experience both stimulating and exacting. It must set
the stage for that which is to follow. It must introduce and yet
leave for the reader the thrills of personal discovery in the
pages yet to come.

The writer of a foreword or preface is aware of the rush
of many thoughts. One finds difficulty in selecting the one brief
paragraph that, above all others, will leave the thing most
desirous of being said.

The members of the Echo staff and the faculty committee
responsible for this-worthy contribution to the extracurricular
activities of the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School are to be
congratulated. The task has notbeen an easy one. There have
been other activities to demand their share of attention.

On the pathway to almost every worthwhile achievement
have been days of bitter disappointment. Men struggling for a
great end are almost always like blind men groping their way

up a hill. They never know how near to the top they are until .

they reach it. At a given point they may be miles, or feet,
from the top. Only by keeping on can they tell. Giving up may
mean sitting? down when only a few feet from the goal.

You have achieved your goal in the completion of this the
Dunbar Echo of 1948. We are proud of you.

Am I a blue eyed German
Or a dull-eyed Portugese?
Is my native home in Spain

0r somewhere in Greece?

Am I a sharp-nosed Russian
Or could I be from Rome?

The only thing that puzzles me is
Where is my home?

I do not think I came from France
Neither down in Gaul.
My face is tan,
No resemblance to them at all.
Did I come from the West Indies,
Or could it be Asia Minor?
Could I be a rice eating girl
From somewhere in China?

I came from a place
That everyone knows.
A place of rare beauty,
Where many people go.

My home was in Africa.
And now I’ve told you so.
I am a proud brown skinned, ‘Q
Dark-eyed American Negro.
