A Gutenberg Bible, above,
was sold at a Christie’s auction
for $2 million.
We are still impressed a year and a half later by an even higher
price of 2.4 million paid by the University of Texas for the Carl
and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation copy on June 10, 1978.
The latest census (courtesy William B. Todd, Antiquarian Bookman)
of the Gutenberg Bible lists 48 copies in existence, many of which
are incomplete. There are four complete copies on vellum and
fifteen complete copies on paper. The United States has five
complete copies (four on paper and one on vellum) and seven
incomplete copies.

» Some years ago a few very incomplete copies were taken apart andl
sold page by page. The University of Kentucky has two such pages,
one from the book of Zacharias and one from Joshua- The type
faces in the two are quite different, showing Gutenberg‘s I r 4
willingness to experiment in printing. The two pages are kept in
_ 4 the Rare Book Room,
We are still·amused by the innocent who toured Rome with us once,
_ and, on viewing the first copy printed by Gutenberg (housed in the
Vatican Library) exclaimed, "Oh, I thought the first Bible was in
Q Hebrew!"
ON LINE LITERATURE SEARCHING WORKSHOP

These Institutes are devoted to advancing the managerial skills
