i PRITCHARD LECTURE
Q » R. W. B. Lewis , the celebrated literary scholar and critic, will .
I deliver the first Edward F. Prichard, Jr. Lecture in Lexington on
i Friday, 12 March, at the University of Kentucky's Spindletop Hall.
g ‘ Lewis, the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of Edith Wharton and a
’ literary consultant to Universal Pictures Studios, will replace the
g previously scheduled speaker, Alfred Kazin, who has suffered a heart
§ attack.
{ F A native of Chicago, Richard Lewis was educated at the English ‘
2 School in Switzerland, Exeter Academy, and Harvard. He received his
Q doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1953. He taught at
i Bennington College, Smith College, Princeton and Rutgers before joining
I the Yale faculty in 1959.
i During the 1950s he was active in Europe as the Dean of the Salzburg
1 Seminar in American Studies, as Kenyon Fellow in Criticism in Florence
` and as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Munich.
Q ( Lewis is author of THE AMERICAN ADAM (1955), THE PICARESQUE SAINT
i (1959), TRIALS OF THE WORD (1965), THE POETRY OF HART CRANE (1967) and
; EDITH WHARTON: A BIOGRAPHY (1975). His Wharton book was named one of
§ the Notable Books of 1975. He has also carried out work on Melville,
{ Whitman and Malraux.
{ Lewis will speak about his research on a major biographical work
j now in progress, a study of the author Henry James and his brother
§ William James, the psychologist.
{ The dinner meeting is open to all. The cost is $12 per person, and
