UK Student Government Presi~

think David Roselle was serious

last month that he might quit as
UK president.

Weeks later, however, when
Roselle resigned to take the top
position at the l'iiii.ersiiy of beta

worst fears come true.

UK’s search must be immune from state

One of l.)il\ltl Roselle's trade-
marks while president ol l‘K was
the excellent relationship he en—
ioyed with facultt .\lter uttering
through the years ol the Singletary
administration in which many fa-
tulty perceived that athletics was
considered to be more important
than academics. Roselle was an
instant fa\orite among faculty.

During his first year when an
anemic budget proposal from
Frankfort caused concern in the
higher education community. Ro-
selle called a meeting .it the Otis
A. Singletary Center tor the Arts
and was greeted by seteral thou
sand supportive faculty.

But when he announced last
month that he will leave UK by
July I to become president ol the
University of Delaware, some fa—
culty have to feel that they were
betrayed by their savior.

To many faculty. Roselle's dc-
parture, and the manner tn which
Charles Wethington was named
interim president, is the. last sign
they needed to leave UK

Although Roselle said that the
NCAA probe into the men's has
kctball program pretented him
from implementing sortie ot his

hind his decision to lease [K was
the lack ol political and financial
support he receited from (iov.

And to man} lacults. if thc
leader of their state \lllL\ not re-
vtect he needs tit higher educa-

Officials hope Add-drop runs smoothly

By C.A. DUANE BONIFER
Editor in Chief

Add-drop usually is not a pleas-
ant experience for students. but
Registrar officials are hoping that it
is not too hairy for those who go
through it tomorrow.

Decentralized Add—drop was held
for the first time last semester at iii-
dividual colleges, and although it
was not as successful as Registrar
officials had hoped, they said the
process ran a bit smoother.

One encouraging sign for the
way things might go tomorrow is
the number of graduate and College
of Arts & Sciences students who
went through early and finals week
Add-drop last fall.

796 graduate and Arts & Scienc-
es students went through early
Add-drop, and 343 students went
through finals week Add-drop.

“People are becoming more so‘
phisticated and becoming more
aware of the new system," said

Lisa Collins, registration coordina»
tor. “it‘s good to know your sched-
ule before you go home for war
tion. And that‘s what we‘re
trying to encourage w itli students."

One of the changes in this semes—
ter's Addalrop is the order in which
students will go through the pro-
cess. Last semester. seniors and
graduate students were first in line
and freshmen had to wait until the
end of the day.

Tomorrow. however. freshmen
wtll be the first group to add class--
es and seniors and graduate stu»
dents will have to wait until the end
of the day.

The change was made so fresh-
men would have more selections at
with l()()- and ZOO-level courses.
Collins said.

Last semester many lower-
division courscs were closed by the
time freshmen went through Add»
drop, lcavmg them With few op
tions. Collins said.

“Freshmen go last in everything,

and we’ve dCL‘ltlt‘tl to let freshmen
go first," Collins said. “It's a be-
havior thing that we‘re not going to
be able to assess until we go
through it one time."

(‘ollins said that it should not be

difficult for seniors to find upper,

diviSton electives to ttll their re-
quirements.

More student workers also have
been added to help this year. (‘ol~
tins said, and Registrar officials
will work closely with officials in
UK‘s computer services to deal
with arty problems that arise.

University Registrar Randall
Dahl said that Add-drop tomorrow
should run smoother than last se-
mester. but the ultimate success of
the day depends on students.

“I guess there's a liiiitt to how ef-
ficient you can be at the beginning
of the semester,“ Dahl said. “One
thing we can't do with the system
is create (more ) space" in classes.

Students should be flexible in
scheduling their classes and come

prepared with alternatit es tomor-

row. Dahl said.

“W hat slows (Add-drop) down is
when people have to stop and
think. (ice. what do I do next."
We hate to do business on the

spot" he said.

Registrar officials said the) want
students to get the classes they are
interested in, but in going through
Add-drop students must be rcalts~

UL',

“ll \ou didn't get the schedule
you wanted .. chances are wou are
not going to get w hat you want" to
morrow, Collins said.

”We’re nevi r gottig to be able to
do away with (Adddrop) ., be-
cause of the nature of student ltle.
All we can do is try to make it
as pleasant and efficient a process
wrth the vast numbers we have to
serve." she said.

If students cannot make their as-
srgned times. the Registration (‘en-
tcr. 230 Student Center. Wlll re.
main open until 7 pm. tomorrow
