HISTORY AND TRADITION
I
'l`l·ll·] lI)l€.\ ()l·` .\ Sil`.\’l`l·Z llNI\'liRSl7l`\' goes back as lar as
l77(i, but the University ol Kentucky as we know it today was
not established until 80 years later. ln l8li5 a lientucky (Zollege
ol .\griculture and Mechanic .\rts was chartered by the (Leneral
.\ssembly as part ol Kentucky University. `l`hirteen ytars later.
in l878. the agricultural and mechanical division separated lrom
Kentucky University. and in l00rl it became known as State Uni»
versity, Lexington. Kentucky. ln llllti the school became the
University ol` Kentucky.
Today the University has a (lollege ol` .\rts and Sciences, (lol-
lege ol` ;\griculture and Home liconomies, (lollege ol` lingineering.
(Lollege ol` l.aw. (Iollege ol` liducation. (lollege ol (lommerce. (1ol~
lege ol l’harmacy. College ol .\dult and lixtension litlucation.
(Zollege ol` Medicine, and a Graduate School.
Outstanding administrators. laculty. and stall members have
made it possible lor your Uli to grow into what it is today. l·lun»
dreds ol` teachers. research workers. and technicians are employed
on the campus. There are also ·l7»l state field extension workers
and agricultural and home demonstration agents serving all parts
ol` Kentucky.
The University campus is a small community within the heart
ol Lexington. The campus has 700 acres, with more than (S0
major buildings and numerous lesser ones. ln addition to the
5til-acre campus larm, the Experiment Station area includes the
recently acquired 778 acres at (jolclstream l·`arm and adjoining
land totaling l.l50 acres. The on-campus enrollment is about
7,000. Since l8(i5, the University has enrolled more than 00.000
students, and conlerred approximately $$0,000 degrees. '[`here are
now more than 5.000 active alumni members.
'l`raclition takes its hold on students more and more as they
nearly complete the tour ol` Uli. Some traditions will be made
by you and others will be carried on by you. Some seemingly true
traditions at the time are merely lads and they will come and go.

Several decades ago the ratcoon coat. the llapper skirts. and
berets were the lad ol` the campus. Today these have been re-
placed by Bermuda shorts and knee socks.
One ol the traditions which is still traveling year alter year
is the 11ick11atne "\\·’ildcat". The name was attached to UK
teams in l9()9 in a speech made by (Qommandant (larbusier. then
head ol the military department ol the old State University. The
(lommandant was addressing a chapel audience ol` students on
the showing ol the Kentucky lootball team in deleating Illinois
6·2 when he said. "they lought like wildcats." The name taught
on and spread by word ol mouth and by the press. This is the
lirst and only nickname that Kentucky athletic teams have ever
had.
Realism was added to the nickname when the llniyersity was
presented with "(jolonel." a live Kentucky wildcat. (lolonel came
to the University in 19-17 as a gilt to SUKY. student pep organi1a»
tion. The mascot made his appearance at all home games. ln
February. l$l5·l, he was removed to a state wildlile larm where
he died two weeks later. His carcass was stulled and tnotmted.
and returned to the Zoological I\luseum in the Funkhouser Build-
ing where it is now on display.
The school colors are bltte and white. ()llicially they are Yale
blue and white. but in the days when the school was known as
the Agricultural and l\leehanical (lollege ol Kentucky the colors
were "Stoll blue" and white. Back in the lSE}(l`s a group old Ken-
tucky lootball stalwarts met to choose their school colors. Some»
one suggested blue and white—"blue like l)ick Stoll`s necktie"—
and the school had its colors. judge Richard li. Stoll later be·
came a prominent alumnus and trustee ol` the University. Stoll
Field. the present stadiutn playing area. was named in his honor.
The stadium proper. l\lcl,ean Stadium. was dedicated in memory
ol` Price McLean. who died November 7. l92El. as a result ol` in»
juries sullered the day before in a lootball game with the Uni»
versity ol (Iincinnati.
