FIFTH SEMINAR IN GRAPHIC DESIGN AT THE KING LIBRARY PRESS: VICTOR HAMMER
CENTENARY
I Experts on printing and bookmaking from Omaha, London and Chicago
will arrive in the Department of Special Collections this weekend to V
take part in a centenary program honoring the late Lexington artist and
printer, Victor Hammer. Hammer gained fame for his typographical
interpretation of the uncial script and for the beautiful books printed
at his Stamperia del Santuccio in Florence, Italy, and later in
Lexington.
Harry Ducan, of the College of Fine Arts at the University of
Nebraska, studied with Hammer at Wells College in Aurora, New York.
This was in the 1940s, just after Hammer came to the U.S. from Europe.
Duncan is celebrated for his limited first editions of such American
authors as Allen Tate, Robert Lowell, Robert Penn Warren and Tennessee
Williams.
John Dreyfus, of London, is a well-known printing historian and
designer. He is Typographical Advisor to the Cambridge University Press
and Chairman of the Printing Historical Society. He is an acknowledged
authority in the field of bibliography and has been honored both in
Britain and on the continent for his contributions to typographical
scholarship.
R. Hunter Middleton, of Chicago, is an authority on the woodcut art
of Thomas Bewick and an important designer of typefaces. He was
formerly Vice President of the Ludlow Typograph Company. He was a close
personal friend of Victor Hammer, and helped to carry out the production
of a number of his types. . .
The Seminar begins at 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 2, with a talk by
John Dreyfus at the University of Kentucky Art Museum and continues
through lectures and workshops on Saturday and Sunday in the Department
of Special Collections. Registration is $12 for students and $20 for
non-students, A five weekend handpress printing workshop will follow
the Seminar. Registration is $25 to cover the cost of materials. For

The new weekend hours for the Business and Economic Information I
Center will be Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 12 noon to  
11:45 p.m. — `
The Mathematics Library hours for Sunday will be l p.m. to S p.m. S
(formerly 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.) due to the changes in the hours the
Patterson Office Tower will be open. The Mathematics Library is now
open the following hours: E
Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
‘ Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday CLOSED

LIBRARY FACULTY AGENDA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23
George Cunha is unable to meet with the Library Faculty at the‘
October meeting. He will come to the November meeting to discuss his ‘
preservation review of the Library System.
I would like to have the regular meeting of the Library Faculty as
scheduled (October 23, 8:30 a.m., Gallery). Following the full meeting,
I would like to meet with the non-tenured librarians to review
University promotion/tenure procedures including plans for the current
year.

FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE
The Columbia University Society of Fellows in the Humanities has
announced postdoctoral and senior fellowships for 1982-83. One
( fellowship is available to recent PhD's (must have received the degree
between January 1 and July 1, 1982). Stipend of $17,500. Two senior
fellowships will be awarded to scholars of accomplishment and promise
who have held the doctorate and who have been teaching as fu11—time .
faculty for at least five years but are untenured. Applications must G
come from the department chairmen or a nominating committee. Deadline

COMPUTERS: A NON-TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION FOR LIBRARIANS
The Pratt Institute is sponsoring a series of seminars in high
technology. The first in the series is "Computers-A Non-Technical
