Methodic madness

Add/ Drop process really
isn't all that complicated

Centralized add-drop, which
begins tomorrow in Memorial
Coliseum, is one of those procedures
that has gotten a poor name over the
past few years. Sort of like a flu
shot; it does a lot of good, only it
hurts like hell.

But the process is fairly simple.
According to associate registrar
George Dexter, it usually takes
about 10 minutes and only in ex-
treme cases can it last as long as an
hour. But there are three basic rules
to remember before heading to the
Coliseum.

First, bear in mind the reason for
the semantic change of titles from
“drop-add" to “add-drop" (yes,
there is a reason). Simply, officals
are trying to say a student shouldn't
drop a class until he or she has
something to add in its place.

Second. check the schedule to see
when your name is allowed into
centralized add-drop. If you're
early. you have to wait. Latecomers
are allowed to proceed.

Finally, pick up an add-drop slip
from your advisor or in the dean‘s
office of your college.

Now you‘re all set to enter
Memorial Coliseum and begin ad-
ding and dropping. The procedure is
as follows:

1. For adding a class. check at the
table of the appropriate department
to see if the desired class has any
openings. If there are. pick up a
class card and hang on to it. For
dropping a class. pick up a drop
class card at the department table
for the class being dropped.

2. After you have collected all the
appropriate class cards. take them
to your college‘s table for approval.
The college tables are in the right
concourse.

3. Keep your copy of all documents
until the end of the semester in case
the computer doesn‘t register any of
the changes. Dexter said students
should check with the professors
early in the semester to make sure
their changes have been processed
correctly. rather than at the end.

A map will be given to students
entering the (‘oliseum showing the
location of tables for the various
departments and colleges.
Generally. all departments in the
(‘ollege of Arts and Sciences are on
the west concourse and all others
are on the east. Tables for the
English and History departments
are on the (‘oliseum floor.

If you miss tomorrow's cen-
tralized add-drop. the procedure is
only complicated by the fact it

becomes decentralized. All slips
and signatures are handled through
the individual department and
college offices. The lone exception is

which will keep its operation under
the single roof of Buell Armory on

in certain cases. the addition or
loss of classes changes a student's
fee assessment. Dexter said those
students who have already paid
their fees should come to 107 Gillis
Building (formerly the Ad-
ministration Annex) for
reassessment or refund. Those that
have not already paid can have their
fees reassessed when they pay in the
Student (‘enter Ballroom.

Dexter said more than 3.000
students will use the add-drop
program this semester and urged
students to make changes only “if
there is absolutely a valid reason."
Dexter added that class spaces are
tight and “there simply isn‘t that
much left."

Any questions concerning the
procedure can be answered by

Those who

register late
may face

long walks

By ANITA R. STL'RGILL
Kernel Staff Writer

There are two types of late
registration for students who have
not yet selected class schedules for
this tall.

New undergraduate students who
were cleared for late registration
will attend an advising conference in
the(‘lassroom Building this morning
at 7:45 and. along with new graduate
students. complete their scheduling
in Memorial (‘oliseum beginning at
noon today.

The other division of late
registration is for those returning
students who did not go through
advance registration last spring.
These students will be charged a $20
late registeration fee and will
register for classes Aug. 30 through
Sept. 1;.

Late registeration will be held
Wednesday and Thursday on the
mezzanine of the Patterson Office
Tower from 8:30 am. to 4 pm.
Scheduling on the remaining days
will be held in 2 Miller Hall.

The operation for late registration
is time-consuming and requires a
pair of sturdy walking shoes to
travel the distance of campus
several times.

First a student must check-in at
the above locations and then pick up
class cards for the desired classes at
the respective department offices.

After obtaining all the necessary
class cards. the student returns
them to his or her college.

The difficulty arises in that many
classes will be closed since most
students have already registered.

Ann Cox. in charge of late
registering students. said that
returning students did have the
option to advance register and
didn't. so the process of registering
is a little more difficult.
