f The inggntgry‘pf Federal Archives in th§_states is one of the products 1
3 of the work of the Survey of Federal Archives, which Operated as a nation~ j
2 wide project of the Works Progress Administration from Janurry l, 1936 to i
g June 30, 1937, and has been continued since that date as a unit of the i
; Historical Records Survey. also Operating as a nation-wide project of the ‘
g Works Progress Administration and a group of state or local projects of 1
i that Administration. 1
a The Plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows: 1
t I consists of reports on the administration of the Survey, acknowledge— 4
§ nents, and general discussions of the location, condition, and content of j ,
3; federal archives in the states. Succeeding series contain the detailed !
,% information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form, a sepa— ‘
3 rate series number being assigned to each of the executive departments 5
i ‘(except the Department of State) and other major units of the Federal j
% Government. Within each series No. l is a general introduction to the i
E field organization and records of the governmental agency concerned; the f
% succeeding numbers contain the inventory preper, separate numbers beine; l
d assigned to each state in alphabetical order. Thus, in each series, the >
‘fi inventory for Alabama is he. 2, that for Arizona E0. 3, that for Arkansas ‘
N0. 1+, etc. I
,Q For each local office information regarding each series, or unit of f
;2 related records, is presented in the following order: title, inclusive ,!
EE dates ’"to date" indicating an open file at the time the information was i
3% secured) aeneral description of informational content, description of
5% the system of filing or indexing (if any), a statement of frequency and
E? purp0se of use, form of the record itself (bound volumes, sheets in fold-
;g are, etc.), linear footage, description of the containers, physicel con- i
g dition of the records (not stated if satisfactory), location by rosm nun- {
,fi ber or other identifying information, and finally, the number of the Form ;
E2 588A on which this information was originally recorded by a Survey worker ‘
in and from which it was abstracted fer the Inventory. This form is en file
fl in The National Archives. When it contains substantial information on I
% addenda sheets which has not been included in the mimeOfiraphed abstract, 1
E indication of this is given by use of the reference "See addenda." ,
.fi In Arizona the worfi of the Survey was directed by Professor Howard A. W '
E; Hubbard of the University of Arizona, with Mrs. Meryl E. Morgan as his I
i: assistant, until June 30, 1937. Since that date the state project has
i been directed by Mrs. Morgan. This inventory of the records of the Vet- i

E The first offices of the above named agency in Arizona were established .
g at Phoenix and Tucson in 1923. Prior to that time the veteransl affairs ‘
3 had been handled by the U. 8. Public Health Service, a branch of the ,
E Treasury Department. The early Arizona establishments were sub-offices I
g of the San Francisco Office. The agency itself after its removal from I
E the Public Health Service operated as part of the United States Veterans' i
3‘ Bureau for a number of years. In 1925, a regional office was established '
Q for Arizona, with headquarters at Phoenix. This agency came under the
Si newly organized Veterans' Administration. On Sept. 1, 1936, the office ,
ff was moved from Phoenix to Tucson, Arizona, where it is now located, and .
