One phrase consistently
has a magical effect on col-
lege students. and no. we're
not talking about "beer and
pizza."

"It's free" holds the
promise of entertainment
and recreation without a
wallet.

Around UK and Lexing-
ton, opportunities abound
for the penniless college
community. and transportar
tion now ranks among them.

LexTran offers free bus
rides to UK students and the
ulty. with ID. both around
campus and across the city

Jenny Williams, market»
ing director for LexTran.
said many students have al-
ready begun to take advan-
tage of the service.

"I'm very excited about
the significant increase of
students riding our buses."
she said.

Williams said she is
planning a survey to deter»
mine what new bus routes
students want. Extra buses
could be running soon on
Red Mile Road and
Nicholasville Road. she said.

The arts community at
UK and in Lexington pro-
vides many events that cost
nothing for students.

UK's Singletary Center
for the Arts. at the corner of
Euclid Avenue and Rose
Street, houses the UK Art
Museum. which is free for
UK students.

The gallery at the Down-

town Art Center, is free, and
patrons can also take advan-
tage of Art a la Carte. a se-
ries of free lunchtime con~
certs. through Sept. 27. The
music varies from classical
to traditional Appalachian.

For those interested in
personalities. the UK Stu-
dent Activities Board brings
a number of guest speakers
and performers to campus
throughout the year.

SAB's lineup this fall in-
cludes conservationist Jane
Goodall, rapper Ice-T and for-
mer Playboy bunny Rebekka
Armstrong.

These events are free for
students. SAB President
Chris Rogers said she thinks
the scheduled guests will ap-
peal to the UK community.

"We try our best to bring
exceptional entertainment to
the students at no cost to
them." she said.

It also costs nothing

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Merger won't affect
all of College of HES

In reference to a story regarding the merg
ing of Interior Design and the (‘ollege of Ar-
chitecture m the Sept. .3 issue of the Kernel.
readers should be aware that the proposal
mentioned in .losh Thomas article would only

apply to this single department The other
units in the College of Human linyiroiimental
Sciences may develop their own proposals in

the future for alignment w ith other colleges
and or renaming. but those will be separate
and distinct from the one inyolying interior
design. In fact. .it this stage l .1111 not aware of
a consensus among HES faculty \y ith regard to
restructuring. but [ am certain many active
and interesting discussions among HES facul-
ty will be occurring over the semester.

l want to compliment Mr. Thomas for his
thorough and balanced reporting of this pro
posed restructuring I hope he and his col-
leagues continue to inform our academic coin
munity about the many interesting and
sometimes coiitroyersial issues at l'K that
will he arising over this ili'zltli‘llllt‘ year.

Columnist blames
wrong department

An column written by Rickey Pack in Fri
day's Dialogue section repeatedly refers to the
UK Police as the department that impounded
his bike. The UK Police do not impound hikes
unless requested to do so in the absence of the
University Parking Department. This is the
primary responsibility of the same people that
he paid to get the hike back from the l‘K
Parking Department

He should also he reminded that bicycle
regulations have been in effect for several
years and were developed with the input of
students. faculty. staff and various community
members These rules and regulations are
mostly imposed toi‘ public safety and security
reasons. The l'niversity l’arking Department
has done an excellent job with providing hike
racks Ill and near major academic and resi-
dential areas, \\'lll(‘ll the vast iiiaiority of stu-
dents use appropriately

We at the l'iiiyei'sity Police Department
appreciate the Intention we receive with a job
well done but do not wish to take the inapprov
priate credit for such a job when it was not us.
