- Robert Lowell Exhibit at the University Libraries - Ȥ

A commemorative exhibit for Robert Lowell (1917-1977) is our- §
rently on display in the foyer of King Library North at the Uni- §
_ versity of Kentucky. (Lowell, described as "the poet of the V $
. American consciousness and conscience" both for his political §
stance (he was an early opponent of the Vietnam war and refused V i
a highly publicized invitation to the White House) and for the §
particular style of his poetry, died in New York last September. A
His second wife was Elizabeth Hardwick, Lexington native and €
alumna of the University. i
Lowell achieved recognition early in his career. After studying
with three Kentuckians, Cleanth Brooks, Allen Tate, and Robert _
‘ Penn Warren, at Louisiana State University in the l930’s, he
. published two highly-acclaimed books of verse, Land of Unlikeness l
- ` and Lord Weary's Castle; the latter won him his first Pulitzer
prize. After several more books of poetry, translations, and
plays, he published Life Studies in 1959 and created a new style
of writing called "confessional" poetry for its highly subjective Q
tone and its frequently harsh personal revelations. Sylvia Plath 2
and Anne Sexton were among the practitioners of the "confessional" T
mode, but none achieved Lowell's mastery of it. The Dolpeie Z
· ‘ (1973) won him a second Pulitzer, and Day by Day Tl977Y has been L
( nominated for a third prize this year. Y
_ Included in the Lowell exhibit are books, including limited _
. editions and signed copies, clippings, photographs, and corre~ i
Q spondence. Much of it was acquired by purchase earlier this
? year} parts have been loaned by Miss Hardwick and others who _ 1

EERSONNEL
When John Gray leaves in August to attend law school on a full-
time basis, Administrative Services will be merged with Personnel
under Faith Harders. The Library system functioned this way in
past years and the Administrative Committee felt that the ad-
, vantages of the merger would outweigh any disadvantages.
Dennis Dickinson has accepted the position of Assistant Director
for Public Services and will start August 1.
