(Submitted by Sharon Neikirk, ACTS Chairperson) ...2- LS/2000 STAFF TRAINING The OPAC (online public access catalog) Training Subcommittee has placed on reserve under Olson several packets of printed guides for self instruction. Training packets are also available at the Medical Center Library from Bernie Baldini. Included in the packets are two instruction sheets (one brief and one more detailed), a list of sample searches for practicing at the terminals, and a series of commonly asked questions with answers on the LS/2000 system. All staff members are encouraged to take a short block of time to become familiar with the system (branch library staff will be trained as their systems come up). Currently, there are three OPAC terminals in the Reference Room and four in the Medical Center Library. They are available on a first come/first served basis. You may also arrange to use terminals in the King Circulation Department by contacting Gail Kennedy (7-8396). Any questions concerning searching methods V and/or the instructional packets can be directed to the reference staff at the terminal sites. Also, arrangements for one—on—one tutorials can be made by contacting any of the members of the subcommittee: Laura Olson, Patty Powell, Rob Aken, Brad Grissom, Bernie Baldini, Karl Boewe, Judy Wiza, JoAnne Goode, Terry Birdwhistell, Gary Stottlemyer. Karen Cobb of the Reference Department has been elected the University adviser to the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association for the 1985/1986 academic year. Her duty is to counsel and advise the organization and its offices, in addition to attending their meetings and functions. Karen received her BA in English, with a minor in Business Administration, in 1980 from the Talladeega College in Talladeega, Alabama. She had worked as a children`s librarian and a substitute teacher before coming to Lexington. She worked as a Library Technician, then went to the UK Library School part- time, graduating in December, 1984. while a graduate student in 1983/1984, Karen served as Vice President of the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, and also as the SGA Senator from Library Science. ON THE ROAD Jim Birchfield traveled to Normal, Illinois to speak for the Friends of the Library, Illinois State University. He spoke at a November 21, 1985 meeting. ..3.. THE LIBRARY ON TV The Hunt — Morgan Family Collection, a large and notable part of Special Collections Kentuckiana holdings, will be featured on a "U.K. Roundtable" program. Paula Pope conducted an interview » with Professor Jim Ramage, of Northern Kentucky University, when he visited the Library for the Hunt — Morgan Family Reunion this past summer. Professor Ramage discusses his now book about the Hunts and Morgans on the program, as well as some new information about the families that he has recently discovered. The program will air on UKTV, Channel 16, as follows: Monday Dec. 9 2:00 pm Wednesday, Dec. ll 9:00 pm Friday, Dec. 13 10:30 am & 6:30 pm The program will air the following week on Telecable's Channel 9.
