BOWLING GREEN. Ky Western
Kentucky ltiiiversity President Thomas
Meredith assigned a low priority Friday to
any changes in student pubhcat ions.

Any changes will “remain on the back
burner." Meredith said alter the release ot
an internal report that had been prepared
by a special panel for Kern .v\lexander
before he gave up the presidency

Meredith said he would study the issues
in the report "in due time. which will iioyy

“This is not a high priority.. Meredith

Meredith said he was disappointed that
the report was released without his per»
mission. but ('atherine Hancock Mctlarty.
the Nashville. Tenn. lawyer who headed
the panel, said. “I'd like to hear what he
has tosay about it "

The report was prepared last summer by
a patiel created by Alexander.

Une panel member said the report did

ot the publications

Stringer said he prcyiously had declined
to discuss the recoinmcndations because

Today‘s Kernel is two pages shorter
than what we had planned because of a
brief power shortage. About 4:30 pm,
yesterday. the power in the Journalism
Building went out for about five seconds
which caused the Kernet's computer
system to go down,

It took about 2'; hours before the sys-
tem was back up. and Kernel editors
decided to "drop down" to four pages
so the paper would not be at the news-
stands later in the day.

As a result of the decision. the View-

point and DiverSion pages were not run
today.

According to Ed Van ttook. a spokes-
man for Kentucky L'tilihes. an equip
ment failure at the Scott Street substa- ,
tion created a problem with the high—
voltage circut that caused a “dip" in
the power around 1.7K for about [we see

The high winds that came through
Lexmgton yesterday afternoon brought
some power lines down and caused
power losses in some areas. Van Hook
said.

The neonatal intensive care unit
at the UK Chandler Medical Center
is facing the consequences of its
own success in saving babies in
that it is often bursting at the
seams with sick newborns.

That‘s because many Kentucky
women do not get adequate prena-
tal care. despite the technological
wonders that enable neonatal doc—
tors and nurses to save babies.

Some of it is because parents
prefer to keep their children at UK
rather than send them to any of the
five other hospitals in the eastern
half of Kentucky with neonatal

units for babies who are not crit-
ically ill.

UK‘s neonatal unit increased its
occupancy rate from 93 percent in
1985 to 108 percent in 1987. An aver-
age of 41 beds in UK‘s neonatal in-
tensive care unit was occupied
every day last year — three more
than its licensed capacity.

For the first six months of 1988.
the unit was running at 94 percent
of capacity. according to medical
center statistics on file with the
state.

UK's neonatal unit is the onl}
Level 111 nursery in the eastern
half of Kentucky —- meaning it is
reserved for very sick babies need»
