Three newcomersWake Forest, Princeton and Wisconsinjoin with host and defending champion Kentucky to form the classy field for the eleventh annual University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament to be staged in the Wildcats' 11,500-seat Memorial Coliseum December 20 and 21.
Kentucky Athletic Director Bernie A. Shively, who has directed the nation's richest regular season cage classic since its inception in 1 953, announced that pairings for the opening night of action in 1963 will pit Wake Forest against Ivy League champion Princeton and the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten against the host Wildcats. All three of the visiting teams were selected on the basis of their potential for outstanding play this season and are expected to give the '63 UKIT one of the best balanced fields in history. The arrangement of games is intended to further emphasize the UKIT aim of presenting inter-sectionally flavored play that will provide the public a look at the style of basketball as it is played in different sections of the country.
Participants in the UK Invitational vie for an imposing trophy (shown at left), record-size shares of the net proceeds and important national prestige which has become associated with success in the pre-Christmas classic.
The monetary dividend in past years has increased steadily in proportion, ranging from approximately $8,200 paid to each of the four teams the first year to $15,420 awarded each club in 1959. The 1962 renewal, in which Kentucky topped West Virginia for the title, proved to be the second most successful in history as a two-night total audience of 22,138 netted participating teams equal shares of the net proceeds amounting to $14,067.17more money than most schools make on their basketball program in an entire season.
Over the years, 20 of the top basketball powers of the country have taken part in the UK Invitational. West Virginia holds the records for most visits with four appearances and is the only visitor to cop more than one championshipwinning in 1957 and again in 1959. Baron Adolph Rupp's host Wildcats, one of the toughest outfits in the country to beat at home, have taken top honors six times, Dayton and St. Louis once each. Oregon State and Iowa rounded out last year's field with the Beavers latching on to third place.
The prestige angle associated with the UKIT stems from the high-calibre competition that annually makes up the field and is reflected by the fact that the winner generally makes a significant jump in the wire service polls. Twice in recent years, the UK Invitational champion has vaulted to the top spot in the rankings and often has used its success as momentum to post a good season record plus often attaining a coveted spot in post-season tourney play.
 PRINCETON Tigers
The story of Princeton's ascendance to a spot of national prominence in the basketball world and its ambitions to retain a share of the limelight this season boils down to the presence on the Tigers' roster of a young man by the name of Bill Bradley. With a sensational break-in season behind him, the sizzling All-America choice is looking for new fields to conquer and the initial appearance of his Princeton team in the prestige-packed UK Invitational could give the 6-5 forward a chance to prove the wares that netted him a 27.3 points a game as a soph. Bradley, held under 20 points in only one game a year ago, almost single handedly led his Princeton mates to the championship of the Ivy League and scored 40 points in the Tigers' losing effort in the NCAA Tournament. Princeton, returning to Lexington for the first time since a 1926 conquest of Kentucky's Wildcats, appears to have a little more help this year for Bradley. Losses off the Ivy champion squad of 1963 were light and Coach Bill van Breda Kolff has compensation in a 6-2 forward, Chuck Berling, who missed half of last season and a host of others including Bill Howard6-4 captain and center who was sidelined much of last season with a leg injury. Up from the yearlings to help out are several promising operatives headed by top scorer Ed Steube (6-2) and 6-6 center Don Niemann. The Tigers again will confront opponents with a relatively short team that stresses good defensive play, works for the good shot with apuzzling shuffle offense and runs well when the occasion demands. Princeton, which has never faced its opening night UKIT foeWake Foreston the hardwood, gives every indication of being ready for an encore performance of its 1963 campaign. Following the pattern that saw them rebound from a poor start last season to stage a tremendous finish, the Tigers dropped their opening game this seasonto Villanova by a 72-59 countand then shuffled forward to winning ways with impressive triumphs over Army, Lafayette and Navy.

Main at Midland _ WAKE FOREST Deacons
Benefiting by the mistakes of early season encounters and showing improvement with each successive game, the experienced and tournament-wise Deacons of Wake Forest College make their initial appearance in the UK Invitational with much to recommend them as a strong challenger. The traditionally-successful charges of Horace (Bones) McKinney, one of the nation's most colorful mentors as well as one of the best, come into the tournament all even on the season after a smashing triumph over ambitious Marquette. Earlier this season, Wake Forest was bumped by its own errors in contests against strong Davidson and North Carolina State but topped powerful Purdue in surprising fashion. Both Coach McKinney and the experts are tabbing the Demon Deacons as a much stronger outfit than the disappointing club of last season and some opinions peg McKin-ney's seventh edition as potentially on a par with the aggregation that advanced to the national finals at Louisville two seasons back. The Deacons were ousted by Ohio State that year but came back strong to cop third place in the NCAA Tournament with a win over UCLA. Like the host Wildcats, Wake Forest lays claim to a problem in the absence of a "big" man in its lineup. However, the Deacons show well distributed height throughout the roster and particularly in the opening lineup which shows only one man under 6-2. Tallest of the regulars is 6-6 junior pivotman Ronnie Watts. Experience also is a factor working in Wake Forest's favor. Only one sophomore starts and three seniors open with status as returning starters. The soph regular6-2 guard Bob Leonardis in the "hot shot" category, picking up where he left off in a sensational freshman campaign to pace the varsity in scoring. Well distributed point production finds three Deacon regulars averaging in double figures. The powerful Deacons of the Atlantic Coast Conference, no stranger to the pressures of tournament play and a finalist in their own ACC tourney the last four years, have never faced opening night foe Princeton on the basketball court before. Potential second night opponent Wisconsin also is a total stranger and the Deacons have met Kentucky only once in historylosing a 101-69 decision in 1953.

P.O. BOX 8251 PHONE 277-3977 WISCONSIN Badgers
Bouncy Badger basketball mentor John Erickson is fast gaining a reputation as a master of the psychological approach. With words of optimism sweet to the ears of the alumni spiced in with frank appraisals of his many problems, the smart Wisconsin cage chief successfully clouds the issue over prospects of his crew as it enters the UK Invitational for the first time. But underneath the cloak of offsetting talk, the experts figure that Wisconsin is fast on its way to overcoming what problems confronted it at the start of the campaign. Above all else, the matter seems to be less a case of what is the trouble now than what trouble could have been administered if eligibility questions had not felled two highly promising big boys6-8 scoring ace Jack Brens and a 6-5 running matebefore the campaign began. Now the Badgers "go to the post" a little short on size but long on desire and well-balanced shooting ability. Many of the faithful were ready to write off the 1963-64 season as a rebuilding year after the loss of Brens, last year's scoring leader around who the '64 club was to be fashioned. But not Erickson and his battling Badgers who are thinking in the positive vein and have fought five tough opponents to a standstill. Perhaps the key to the type of hustling, dangerous aggregation that Kentucky and another UKIT opponent will have to contend with was the scrappy, never-say-die effort turned in by the Badgers just a week ago as they held Cincinnati, the nation's sixth-ranked power, to a five-point decision on the home floor of the Bearcats. Earlier, Wisconsin had bested strong Pittsburgh and ambitious Kent State. Sandwiched in between was a heart-breaking, 77-76 loss to tough Ohio University that failed to reflect the fact that the Badgers had the game "iced" at one stage with a 22-point lead. The Wisconsin starting lineup of sophomore scoring leader Ken Gustafson (6-3) and 6-4 senior Bob Johnson at the forwards, 6-6 soph Mark Zubor in the pivot, and backcourt men Mike O'Melia (5-10 senior) and Jim Bohen (5-10 junior) will give the Badgers a combination averaging only about 6-2 in height but the unit makes up for lack of size in speed, hustle and balanced scoring ability.

ConferenceBig I en UKIT RecordFirst Appearance KENTUCKY Wildcats
A lot of the plaguing questions concerning the prospects of the current band of Wildcats that worried Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp and the experts going into the 1963-64 campaign have been satisfactorily answered by a scintillating display of near-flawless basketball in five stiff pre-tournament tests. However, the Ruppmen are hardly an odds-on favorite to successfully defend their UK Invitational title against this season's classy field without being extended to the full extent of their capabilities. Chief among the problems still to be resolved completely is the absence of a truly "big" man (in the sense of height above 6-9) to help control the boards and cope with a tall opponent. In sweeping authoritatively past five tough intersectional foes during traditionally strong early season battling, the charges of the nation's most successful cage tutor have offset their "Achilles' heel" by tremendous shooting, blazing speed on the fast break, awesome passing ability and hard-to-beat teamwork. The 1963-64 Kentuckians, dubbed by sportswriters as the "Century Express" as they rolled up 1 00 points or better in three of the first five games, have progressed steadily in the national ratings and have their eyes focused on impressive showings in the UKIT to vault them to the top of the heap or solidify their high position. Traditionally, the team "picking up all the marbles" in the prestige-packed Kentucky Invitational has made a significant gain in the press polls on national cage strength. Fans and Wildcat opponents will focus their eyes on one of the nation's outstanding cagers who has been highly instrumental in accounting for Kentucky's success. He is number 44a two-time All-America pick and most valuable player of the 1962 UKIT, Charles (Cotton) Nash. Also bearing respectful scrutiny will be the other half of Kentucky's one-two punchbattling Ted Deeken. Between them, the pair (sporting 29.0 and 22.8 averages, respectively) have accounted for 54 percent of the team's point production. Masterminding overall operations will be cagey Baron Ruppthe famed "Man In The Brown Suit" who has guided UK to the greatest tournament record of any club in history.
