8 ELEMEiNTAfiY LESSONS.

in the numeral system, the key of each tune

is marked by the smell figures,
I, 2, 3, &c., placed over the commence

mom of each tune, and showing that the
key note— the governing iriote-~ the note that every one expects to hear last in the
tune—is on the hrst letter, C, or the second letter, D. of the Grand or Mayo: scale,
«kc. If the letter P be adJoined to the figure, the tune is keyed on the [list letter,
A, or the third letter, C, of the l‘luintive or Minor scale. or mode. 0, shows
the Grand or Major mode. P, the Plaintive or Minor mode.

SCALES OR MODES.

l. Tm»: Major or Grand mode is probally the only natural mode, as, do, is, ‘

m
-4 _ J.
{1, sol. la, 3i, do, or, 1 Is ~+ _:3 (i7 ,
‘2. The Scotch Scale lacks the semitones. as. do, re, mi~s(.i, la—-do.
3. The Minor or Plaintive mode takes six of the Major scale as its tonic, thus,

1 2 3 s 4 s if
6 7 and is rendered the more artificial by accidental sharp:

occurring before fa and sol, in the ascending scale. The semitones in the Minor
scale occur between the second and tlmd notes, and between the seventh and

eighth notes ascending but between the third and iouith ; and Sixth and seventh
descending.

HARMONY.

l, or the tonic of a scale makes 24 vibrations in a. second, while 8 makes 45
vibrations in the same time. They concord or agree more perfectlyihan any other
two sounds. Hence 1 and 8 when sounded together, produce a concord. beenuse
they vibrate 24 times coincident With each other. But i and 2, or I and 7, when

53, ‘27

sounded together. coincide in their vibrations only 3 times. as i,
then divide 24 by 8. and ‘27 by 9. and we have 3 as the anSWer. These are called
discards. because 0' the irregularity of their vibrations. } and 5 coincide l2 timer}
in their vibrations, because 5 makes 36 vibrations in a secmid, 3 makes 3,,-
Vihi‘atinns. hence it mini-ides 6 times in a second With the tonic. l, 3. 5, 5. when
sounded together make a chord; while 1 and 2, or 1 2, and T. or 5, 7, 2, '1, sounded
together, make a discord.

ELEMENTARY LESSON§H

RHYTHM.

THE first department in the science of Vocal Music teaches. that .Inu 1d!
may be long or short; or‘ treats of the length of sounds. Notes or numerals,
are the signs of sounds; and the length of the numerals and rests, used in
this work7 are exhibited in the following table:

Whole note. half, quarter, eighth, Iixtaenth, thirty-second, Sixty-fourth.
: l . l l l l l
9 9 7 , ’ 9 9 1 9 9
:R .R R R R R R
, , ’ , ’ 9 7 i I Q

A numeral is lengthened. one-half by a hyphen after lt; thus. 6- R- and .6- - -
or .n- - - added hyphens lengthen the preceding hyphen one-half.

EXERCISES IN THE NUMERAL SYSTEM OF NOTATION.

Horizontal lines represent the length 0“ tunes.

Perpendicular lines, called single bars, divxde tunes into spaCes which are
culled menmrvs.

A double llfll' shows the end of a strain.

Apply the syllable In. to the notes‘ in singing exercises in time.

The soft galcs of cheering reflection, The mind soothed from sorrow and pain.

2 This low vale is far from contention,13 Come, drop, drop the tear of con:

Where no soul can dream of dissen-
sion,

trition,

And yield to the Spirit's direction;
Nor dark wiles of evil invention, And come make the noble confession,
Can find out this region of peace. And how to the Saviour also.

Oh! there, then the Lord will deliver, 'l‘hen rise, rise to walk in his favor,
And souls drink of this beautiful river, And show by your constant behavior,
Wluc‘h flows peace forever and ever, That Christ is your King and you;
And love’s joys shall ever increase. Saviour, [and woe.
From sin, from death, from sorrow
