REQLASSIFICATION SURVEY RESUITS
The results of the reclassification survey conducted by the Association
of Research Libraries for the University of Kentucky Libraries are in.
The report is summarized in Spec Flyer no. 16, March, 1975 (available
in the Director's Office). Karin Sandvik has the complete report and
those interested may get it from her.
Quoting from the March Spec Flyer:
"Fifty-six percent [of the libraries queried] operate solely
under Library of Congress (LC)classification; 12 percent with
Dewey solely; and 30 percent with a combination of LC and
Dewey. The reclassification project usually involved a change
from Dewey to LC; however, several libraries mentioned changes
from Dewey or locally designed systems to a more descipline·
oriented scheme (i.e., Moys for law collections) or from
locally designed schemes to LC.

 ..2- _ V A
One· of the major impetuses for reclassification reported by
responding libraries was potential cost savings. However, for
nearly all the libraries which had decided not to reclassify,
_cost was reported as the most impeding factor. Yet, there
was documentation indicating that over a period of years, _
just maintaining the Dewey Decimal system would be more costly
than reclassifying to and maintaining Library of Congress
classification."
