FOREWORD

Pursuant to the mandates of Sections 4421a-38 and 4421a-39,
Kentucky Statutes, the State Textbook Commission of Kentucky
has adopted basal textbooks for use in county and independent
school districts not eligible by law to select textbooks from a
multiple listing by said Commission, and has selected and approved
a multiple list of textbooks for use in school districts privileged to
adopt textbooks from such list.

This bulletin contains the title, date of copyright, net contract
price, exchange prices, and publisher of each textbook adopted or

approved for use in Kentucky during the five-year period July 1,
1940, to June 30, 1945.

Basal adoptions are designated by an asterisk preceding the
capitalized title.

“The statutes governing eligibility for textbook adoptions from
a multiple listing are quoted immediately following the index of this
bulletin. The names of school districts qualified to make such adop-
tions, and the names and addresses of publishers selling state-
adopted or approved textbooks in Kentucky, are listed also.

' ADOPTIONS FROM A MULTIPLE LISTING

EXTRACTS FROM 1930 TEXTBOOK LAW

From Section 4421a-38, Ky. Statutes. “From this list the board of edu-
cation in an independent school unit embracing a city of the first, second,
third, or fourth class, upon the recommendation of its superintendent, shall,
not later than June 1, 1930, and not later than May lst of any subsequent
adoption year, select and adopt for use for a period of five years in its
school system one book for each subject and grade to be used as a basal
text in its city school system. . . . Provided, the board of education of
any independent school unit embracing a city of the first, second, third, or
fourth class, upon the recommendation of its superintendent and the major-
ity vote of the entire board of education, may adopt a basal text or the
complete series of basal texts from the uniform list of books to be used in
school districts outside of cities of the first, second, third, or fourth class.”

education, of a county maintaining a school term of at least nine months
by a majority vote of the entire board, upon the recommendation of its
superintendent, may select basal textbooks to be used in the county school

district from the list adopted and approved for city school districts by the
State Textbook Commission.”
