WELL DONE, INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES!
Instructional Services operated at maximum capacity from the beginning of the semester
until the spring break. We worked with over 3,000 freshman English students alone,
instructing them in the use of the library. Sessions on the use of materials in the
following areas were conducted:
Reference 55 sessions
News & Periodical Indexes — 64 sessions
Government Publications -73 sessions

 ,3-
The entire reference staff was impressed into service along with Janis Pivarnik,
Kathy Holden, and Chris Stewart in GPD. `
The material, the personnel, and the areas reveal the effects of such heavy use, i"
but the many favorable comments from instructors and students are encouraging.

GPD PUBLICATIONS I
The Government Publications Department of the University of Kentucky's M.I. King
Library has recently received a 15 volume report describing the Solid Solvent
Refined Coal (SRC-I) demonstration plant to be built in Kentucky. The report, I
sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, describes the planning and design of
the plant which will be located on the Green River, near Newman, Kentucky. The
plant, which is to be converted to a permanent commercial plant with additional
facilities to be added, will refine raw coal into a solid, non-polluting product.
This product can be burned cleanly and is intended to reduce oil dependency. SRC-I
involves liquefaction, among other processes, and is described in some detail in
the report. The Government Publications Department is one of five agencies nation-
wide which has been asked by the Department of Energy to make this report available
to the public.
Also GPD now has available for the public a copy of the Commonwealth of Kentucky's
proposed permanent regulatory program for surface mining and reclamation operations
as submitted to the Office of Surface Mining, March 3, 1980. (Be forewarned: it
is twelve inches thick and in fine print!--editor)
For more information on these publications contact Janis Pivarnik, 257-2639.
