Protessor: Prejudices about blacks are ‘deadly serious’

8y Alison Kight
Staff H 'I'iII‘I'

l’reiudices and disbeliefs many
scholars have about black contribu-
tions to society are harmful, a profes-
sor and author said last night.

“ I hese \prejudices are deadly seri—
ous, Ivan\ an Sertima told a crowd in
the ()tis A. Singlet ary (.enter for the
Arts. “They not only affect social cul~
ture, they affect science itself."

Van Sertima, an African studies
professor at Rutgers University, has
written several books about the role of
blacks in society, including “Blacks in
Space," .1 history of the role of blacks
in the space travel industry.

“\Vhen I went to the National
Aeronautics Space Administration,’
Van Sertima said, “the only black I
knew in space was Darth Vader."

Van Sertima said many people are
unaware of the many blacks affiliated
with space and space travel, including
leading engineers at NASA. He also
mentioned the first black to be sent
into orbit, a Cuban who was sent by
the former Soviet Union.

Van Sertima said it‘s important to
nurture the 4 percent of LLS. black
practicing engineers and scientists.

“\\'e have to value each other, ' he
said. “\Ve can't destroy a lot of the
potential that we have."

In addition to teaching at Rutgers,

Van Sertima currently is a visiting pro—
fessor at Clemson University. He has
served as a press and broadcasting ofli—
cer in Guyana, broadcasting to differ—
ent parts of the (Iarihhean and South
Pacific. He‘s a literary critic and author
who wrote, among other books, the
first book on Caribbean literature.

Van Sertima‘s speech. titled “Blacks
in Science: From Ancient to Modern "
was presented by the \ational Society
of Black Engineers.

Van Sertima grew tip in the sparsely
populated jungles that make tip 8; per;
cent of(§uyana. At the age of 8, he was
reading (Iieero and Homer. which he
says could have damaged liiin perma—
nently.

“I grew tip thinking that the (ireek.
Roman and British civilizations were
the only civilizations." Van Sertima
said. “I never even considered African
civiliyation at all."

\\'hen Van Sertima was ‘I, he coir
tracted malaria during an epidemic
that killttl about Sil percent ofthe jun-
gle population. He survived btit suf~
lered some memory loss which he said
he tonqtit red.

“My father always told tne a disad—
vantage can be turned to an advan~
tage." he said.

Van Sertima didn't go to college
until he was 38. “All that university
training taught me was that I was infe«
rior.
