Dear Sir;

Replying to your favor of April 14, which came to me to—dav, I

beg to say that for reaSons that are not difficult to discover it is im—
possible to maintain a summer School in this Department and make it self—
sustaining. The Summer School of last year was . . H pronounced
loss to the Dean of the Department, both finsncial and 0 Therefore,
although I should be willing, in the service of the teacher, Rtale,
to undertake a Summer School upon the same terml as last glmner, I must
decline to consider the matter, so far as I am involved, upon the suppo—
sition that the school is to be made self—sustaining. I

I sunvested some We~Ks s to Profeseor Milford White that he

might see his way to undertake something of the kind, but I am not at this
writing informed whether he has decided to do so or not.

Many calls have come in regarding the Summer School for this
year, and I have been at a loss what answer to make.

Very truly yours,

 Lexington,§y,June,6th,2§,

President James K.Patterson
and
Board of Trustees of State College,
Lexington,Ky.
Gentlemen:—
I have the honor to submit the following:
My duties here in some respects have been more arduous and
trying of late than during former periods. The co—education
of the sexes, would work well, if the young men and young won»
on, had more maturity and discretion, and a stronger sense of
propriety. Many of them are thoughtless and frivolous. Some

utterly regardless of duty.

Instead of attending their class recitations, they loiter

in the buildings and halls; hold clandestine interviews, and
when approached, escape through the basements.

I have endeavored to obtain the oo—operation of profes—
sors in whose vicinity and halls they waste their time, but
without avail. Professors say, they have no responsibility for
the conduct of students outside of their class rooms, and that
they will not incur odium either by admonition or rebuke.

I frequently ask and obtain the co—operation of the Pree~
ident, which is always cheerfully rendered. I think if concur—
rence of all authorities could be obtained, discipline would
be much better, and uncomplimentary public comment avoided.

Respectfully,

firm/Jig [/jépgflow 1.“

At a meeting of the Board of lrustees of the A. d L. College June
9th 1904, Col. Cla as Chairmai of the special Committee on legislation
subnitted a resolution for adoption by the anrd which is as follows:

The Board of Lrustees of the A. e h. College of LentuCKy regard
with regret and diSpleaSLre the attitude of frof. R. N. Roark in refer—
ence to the legislation proposed and introduced in the late General
Assembly by the Committee on Legislation appointed for this purpose by
the Board of Trustees. They regard his action in acquiescing in, aiding
and abetting the nodification and anemdment of the measuee introduced
by the Committee as an officious intervention in matters outside of his
province and his duties. To the membersof the Committee and the Boand
by whom the Committee was appointed his action indieates a want of del—
icacy and a lack of th" prOper sense of propriety. 1t exhibits a spir—
it of insubordinaticn and disloyalty Vholly incompatible with the du—
ties of a Professor. While, therefore, the Board does not ask for his
resignation, or move for his exclusion from the College, they neverthe—
less rebuke and condemn his aetion as wholly gratuitous and unjustifiable
Action which they beliebe resulted in the practice1 failure of important}
legislation mush needed by the State College.

Said motion was seconded by Judge Barker, and upon the ‘oll-call
being demanded the vote stood a follows:

Ayes: iarker, Bell, Clay, Wrasse, Fatterson, Stout, he
thhord. '

hoes: hinkead and Nichols.
Upon motion of hr. Ransey, by motion duly seconded a

ried he was excused from voting.
