BELL PHONE l872 COURT

' Dr. James K. Patterson, 1 _
President State College, V
Lexington, Ky.,
Dear Sir:—

Your esteemed favor of the 1st inst. came to hand in due course,
for which please accept my thanks. - '

The time to go to Lexington in relation to the question of sewage
diSposal would be after Mr. John T. Shelby has appointedthe consulting eng-
ineer on that subject. What I would like to do in the meantime is to get all
the influence I can in favor of Mr. W. G. Clark, C. E., of Toledo, who has
made application to Mr. Shelbifthe position of consulting engineer.

Mr. Clark was for some years City Engineer of Toledo and I consider
him to be one of the beat posted men in this country on all matters relating
to sewage. He is a good man in every way and thoroughly reliable. The city
of Lexington cannot get a better man for their purpose. It would be an advan-
tage to me also to have him appointed, but as I am an interested party, it
would not do for it to be known that I was advocating Clark's appointment.
Anything that you can do for me in that direction will be appreciated and you '
need have no hesitation whatever in recommending Clark, as he is well fitted
in every respect for the position of consulting engineer for the city of Lex—
ington, in connection with the matter of sewage and sewage disposal.

I hOpe later to have the pleasure of going to Lexington and of call-
ing on you when there.

SPRINGFIELD, MA55., May 15, 1905.
DEAR KINSMAN:
The Third Reunion of the Wing Family of America will be held at Sandwich, Mass., commenc-
ing Saturday, July 8, and terminating Friday, July 14, 1905.

All members of the Wing Family in America of English descent are most cordially invited to participate
in the event. This of course includes all lineal descendants of the male or female lines.

The first known Wing settlement in America was made by Deborah Wing, the widow of Rev. John Wing,
a famous non—conformist minister who had lived in Holland and England, in June, 1632. She came with her four
sons, John, Daniel, Stephen and Matthew, and after staying some five years at Saugus (now Lynn), they moved to
Sandwich, on Cape Cod, and were among the first settlers of the Cape. Indeed, it is claimed that Deborah gave the
name of their home in England to the new settlement—Sandwich. So far as known, every Wing or Wing descend-
ant of English descent now in America, who settled here prior to the Revolution, are descendants of the Rev. John
and Deborah, and it is estimated that they number over 30,000. *

Sandwich itself is a rare old town and its historical associations with the family are so close that it makes
it a pilgrimage well worth the effort. Here were the scenes of the pioneer struggles of our ancestors; here are the old
homes, a number of them still standing in venerable antiquity—one, the home of Stephen Wing, built by him in 1641,
is still occupied by a descendant and it is probably the oldest residence house in New England. Here is the ancient
(Quaker meeting—house at Spring Hill, where seventeen families (three of them Wings) organized the first Friends’
organization in America, and it was here they suffered persecutions at the hands of the Puritans and Pilgrims and
were the first to uphold the standard of religious liberty in the New World.

Come and let us study family history in the place it was made; let us cement family ties, unite the long
scattered branches, and review the years. Two happy Reunions, the first in 1902 and the second in 1903, have been
held at Sandwich, at which the attendance was estimated at 300 on each occasion. Let the Reunion of 1905 be even
more of a success.

The Committee in charge will be George Homer Wing of Springfield, Mass., Alvin P. \Ving of Sand-
wich, Mass., and Mitchell Wing of Boston, Mass.

The local committee in charge at Sandwich will be Alvin P. \Ving, Miss Laura A. Wing and Miss
Llary G. VVing. '

The spacious Casino at Sandwich has been secured and heie the headquarters of the Reunion will be
held. Board and rooms can be secured by addressing Alvin P. Wing, chairman of the local committee, at very
reasonable rates. \Ve would adviseall to engage such as early as possible.

The program will consist of receptions, historical meetings, addresses, papers, music, services at the old
Quaker meeting-house at Spring Hill, visits to the old homes, and the official meeting of the Family Association.

It is particularly requested that those receiving this circular invitation will give the Reunion as wide
publicity as possible through the columns of their local press, and by letters of information to their immediate kins-
people of the Wing line. We hope to get word to all and if any of the Wing family are passed by it is because we
do not have their names on our mailing list. The invitation is meant for you and your family—wife, husband and
children and all of your Wing kinsfolk.

The Secretary will be glad to have addresses sent to him to whom he can mail this circular letter and to
answer any letters of inquiry. ‘

_ Please fill out enclosed slip and mail to the Secretary as early as possible that we may know how
many to plan for.

Cordially yours,
GEORGE HOMER WING, Secretary ’ GEORGE W. WING, President

Recognizing the fact that Kentucky is far behind all her sister
states in educational matters————ranking 37th among the 45 states of the
union in point of general literacy, and 42nd in point of white literacy,
and having within her borders 102,377 illiterate voters, and ndt a single
State Normal School for the efficient training of white teachers—~I—and
realizing that in order to bring her public school system up to the s
standard, it will be necessary to institute an educational campaign such
as other Southern states have begun, which shall arouse every citizen of
the Commonwealth to a more thorough appreciation of our educational
needs; and in view of the fact that at a recent Conference of Education,
called by the Governor of the state and the Superintendent of Public
Instruction and held in the-city of Frankfort on May'24th, 1905, a
Committee of representative citizens was appointed to take up the matter
of organizing an "Educational Improvement commission" whose duty it shall
be to prepare the way for some intelligent remedial school legislation
by the next General Assembly, and to educate public opinion in favor of;

Better schools and better trained teachers,

Better school houses and better equipment,

Longer terms and larger salaries:
therefore we, the undersigned, hereby pledge our hearty support and co—
operation to this commendable movement, and contribute the sums opposite
our names to help defray the expenses of the Committee in the work of
perfecting the organization.

___~—_____—__~m _--_Q_______—____________

All contributions will be sent to Dr. E. E. Hume, Chairman of
the Committee, Frankfort, Kentucky, and will be receipted for by him,
and placed at the disposal of the Committee.

‘ Gil-Immttm' @ullege,
HANOVER, I\‘DI.-\N.-\.

. Nrtw RICHMOND, ()nio, May ‘3 6) . 1905.
Dear Friendz—I am making this appeal for the small balance of the Debt Fund chiefly to the
younger Alumni, whose enthusiasm for their old College should still be strong, and whose success in life
may enable them now for the first time to send small gifts to manifest their loyalty to Hanover, and their
interest in the good work to be done for the young people of the future. I am also very kindly appealing

to some of the older Alumni, who have not yet found it convenient to subscribe to the Debt Fund.

So many generous friends have come forward with gifts that the sum now to be raised is not large,
yet we wish each friend to realize that air ”Md/113‘ /1t'//§. Let each one do what will not greatly burden him.
()Nif l)oi.1..\u will be a welcome gift. (lifts of Sin and above will count fast. An .\vianma of lfl\'1£ DUI.-
1..-Hts each would clear away the aim/r (Ir/IA \Ve wish very much that most of our friends may find them—
selves at liberty to promise this amount.

The debt was contracted for Classic Hall and the Library. \Ve have already secured gifts and prom-
ises for S 2— 5—6 "5." \\'e find that we shall need $713 0 more to (‘¢)/il/5/r‘/(‘/_l’ r/z‘ar ///(’ (EM/(gr of u// n’r/II.
\Vc are anxious to have gifts, or promises, to cover the whole debt before Commencement.

If our friends will kindly listen to us in these small appeals, we may almost promise them the reward
of one or more large gifts for Hanover from strangers before long. The recent gift of 525,1100 for the Li» ,
brary may be some assurance to them that other gifts like it are not very far off. \Ve have special reasons
for hope. Never (lid the prospects of the College seem brighter. A great future is certainly before your
old College. Let us not live to enjoy, but to__bless. Let us work together to make Hanover College a still
greater factor in the (fora/ion ofmaIM'i/m’.

As President Fisher has already begun to pay off claims, we shall lie glad to receive cash gifts, but
we shall also be grateful for promises payable at the convenience of the givers. Gifts may be sent to Presi—
dent l‘Tisher, or myself, and due acknowledgment will be made.

The College has lost much because kind friends have put our letters aside for a day or two, instead of
filling out promises at once and placing them in thereturn envelopes for the first mail. \Vc very kindly ask
\'ot‘ to avoid this mistake. Reward any a ) cal for Hanover an a J )eal for God and Humanity, and give us
the encouragemenLand help of a favorable answer as soon (M_t’on am.

Very earnestly,
