“f4.‘ 60,971.
New York, June.3rd,"1897;

Jas. K. Patterson,'mset,
Lexington, Ky.

Dear Sir:- Your favor of 28th.ulto;, .ad-
.dressed to our.Mr. Whittier, in reference to policy # 164,000, on
your life,.have been'forwarded to us for attention;

,Ia reply we would.say that the above policy was issued
Sept. 25th, 1883,.on the 15-Year Endowment, io-Year Tontine plan,
for 3 2,000, at age 49‘.~
When your policy was issued in 1882ithe Qompany had had no

15-Year policies mature, and.besides showing guarantees to.be stipulated
in the policy the.00mpany made certain.estimates of what then appeared to
be results likely to be obtained in excess of the guarantees. The.making
up of these estimates required certain assumptions as a basis, and for
this basis.the host data than at hand were taken, namely, rates of mor-
tality, interest, expenses and policies discontinued by non—payment of
premiums.which up to that time had prevailed among the policies of the
company. Confident as the Gompany was, and reasonably so, of the probe-
bility.of these estimates being realised, the prospectuses of the plan stated
clearly that the estimates could not be taken as promises or guarantees, but
that the actual results of the future must necessarily depend upon the ex-
perience of the future, and agents were carefully instructed to use them
accordingly;

’ We will ask you to kindly consider the return.uhder your
policy in connection with the cost of the insurance to the Gospeny.“ It
should not be forgotten that had your death occurred during the first year
.of the policy, after.having:paid.only 8 151.03 Sept.‘35th, 1883,,the:qon-
pany.would have been bound to pay.to the beneficiary the.sun of 3 8,000.‘

It has been your.good fortune to.eurviwe to.the present tine, but other
Anenbers.insured at the sane.tinezyour.policy was taken out..hate died.in
the first year of the insurance,:or:in other years during.the.Tontiae period,

 (‘ J. K. e., Page a.)

and such.losses have been partly.paid from.the premiums received.fron
you.' Thus you will~see it has been impossible for the.aompany to retain
and accumulate all the premiums which you have paid. It shouii be under-
stood that the premium which the company Iould be required to charge each
year for a term of fifteen years for a person aged 49 (your age at the
time the policy las issued) for.the.sinple purpose cf.being able to pay
an insurance of 3 2,000 in the event of the death of the insured,is S 61;OO.
Under such a policy.no return lould.he made in the forn.of dividend during
the period.or at the.end of sane, and no cash payment of any kind.eou15 be
provided for in case the.insured outlived the.15eYesr.period.* It is proper
therefore-to regard the sun of such premiums.for the fifteen years.es repre~
.senting the value.to you of the protection.which your family.has had during
the tern.of fifteen years, the.tota1:of such payments:be1ng. .8 915.00
If to this.is added the amount which the gompany is able to
.return to.you in.oash, i. e., . . . __§‘§44.78
Your policy represents an actual cash.ta1ue to you of, 3,659.78
The tota1.annua1 premiums.paid.by you ( 3 151.02 each year), 2,265.30
Sharing.an actua1.value in excess of the total premiums paid of '
ofi . . . . . . 1.294448
While.we very much regret.that you are disappointed in the results
under your.polioy,.still we'think you will admit.that the transaction has
.not been an unprofitale.cne for you: and it should be renenbered:that you
have.had insurance for fifteen years in one of the most reliable insurance
Companies in the.lor1d;
Yours truly,
