 Gerda? id gre ,l‘tess . , April 12th ,1889;

{fly dear Sir:

I have your esteemed favor conceming 9 teacher in
natural history. in your college. I regret th at 915 present I h eve
but one student in natural science from the South who is in any
way fitted to serve your needs. rThis gentlemen, n t‘rflohb of
37or‘th Cerolina, is 21 ready bespoken at a salary of $24000 a year
and en ters on his duties immedietely ef ter inking; his Recheror's
degree. I must abandon all hope of sumoly in? your needs with a
southern man. Among northern“ men of satisfactory character and
attainments, I have two Who would he likely in diverse rays to

serve your needs. These gentlemen T. will now describe to you.

The first of these persons Whom I would recommend is hp.W.W.
T‘Jolenpvho graduated from Uerverd College in 1884. He has since
been resident at the university es essi stent in the hi 010521021
department, as proctor end as private tutor. lvirfiolen is a man of
excellent moral Che raeter end of a very wide training in natural

history T. Consider him perfectly comre tent to teach geology,

mineralogy, botany, zoology and the elements of mic“oscopy- He has

also a good {general knowledge of many other subjects; hes been 9
coach in his tory, fine arts and political economy. In fect, his
whole training in the five years since his :rreduetion hes been in

the direction of teaching. He has shown rather remarkable power

in managing; young: men so as to keep them in stre iejh t ways; he

takesvhgld of his students. In person he is r. man of very simple

appearance, of good size, r:nbher homely "i th 2 pl ein, streig;htfor—
ward way. I should sey~further that he hes en excellent cdmnend
of English. I have found him ye ry useful, in edi torial work. He
is capable of doing a large amount of. In her end, though not appear-
ing; to he a strong person csn stand any amount of work. I have
not lc‘iown him to be ill in the nine years du ring which he h. as been
under my eye. II/Ir.TIolen is by hirth e Philedelphien end her: a
good many of the characteristic features of those born in the
Quaker City. We is about 2'7 yeers of age. I think that his
simple, imohtrusive ways end his evceeding; laboriousness as well
as gre at power of helping .xv'oune; men will make him a. very satisfact—

ory person to the students and the pe oplc of your vicinity. Mr.

ZIolen is thoroughly femilier mi th the system of thi s uni versi ty as

regards the administration end the matters of in stuction. There
are few members of our faculty who know as much of such matters.
Hy only doubt concerns his very homespun "fey, yet this is on the
surface. lie has/at foundation/ much rddress! that is indicated
by the fact that in our summer vacation he has at times been left
in charge of the college office formonths at s time end has car--
ried on the necessary intercourse with the outer world,seein;_:: to
"he numerous persons Who cell for informstion, trensecting some
pretty complicated business with satisfactory PddT'E‘SS- In a WOI‘d,
Ixfr.1Iolen seems Lo me what you essentially need, a man of long -,x—

per ience in Jreaching, who Gen turn his bend to a great variety of

occupations and vvho does not shrink from any duties which may he

 put upon him.

I have just asked a graduate student who is well acquainted
with Mr. I‘Iolen and who is himself from a western college as to his
opinion of I‘w'lrliolen- He Pomohoretes all that I have said,e‘nd
says moreover ”hat he thinks hirdlolen a men of remarkable capaci-
ties for varied workmnd that he does not know a better person
for the tasks for which I recommend this candidate. At present,
F's-’rJIolen is earning as much. es you can afford to pay him by the
services he renders young: men who need tutorial care. He is the
most Valued coach about its college. His work in this capaci ty
has,I think, given him a greet training: es. 5 teacher. he is also
‘Slhoroughlg' familiarized Wi ih the hehit of lecturing;- I estimate
him an excellent pletf orm teacher. Although linliolen is earning;
9.. wood. deal as a coach, the position is not one satisfactory for
e career, and I have urged upon him that he should seek 9 position
as a professor. I am satisfied th at he would accept the apnollli‘r-

ment if it is tendered to him-

I’rfleoflliadd is the second Candidate: I shell bring: to your
attention. . MrJJadd graduated from the college in l886,hsving

pursued during; his academic course on extended study of natural

history; he,i3:1deed, devoted a greet pert of his four years to such

subjects- Since that time he h es held the position of gjradua to
student and has been engaged for e lerge port of this period es m
field assistant in ;§overnment greolopjicel work. Mr.Ledd is in

character on entirel setisfnctory person. He was born in “red-—

 4
fordfl‘iassgis now about 25 years of age; is thoroughly well inform—

ed in ggeologgrmnd has 2 sufficient knowledge of hi ology to teach
in the departments of that field. His training: as a teacher is
limited to e. certain rather small amount of Coaching. I believe
that he would prove a satisfactory man on your ground. We has a,
celm merme r; is not"put out"hy anything: that happensmnd I think
would have a {good influence on students. I presume that he would

he satisfied f,='d)r::the present Wi th e selery of ebout $1200 a year'-

If’ either of these gentlemen by description Commend themselves

to you, I could doubtless erreme for Vour further information
concerning; their cope Citiesmr perhaps so rrrengge it that they

should viSitjyou f0" further Cortsultetion.

‘ l

I

Although I have not lied much to do wi fh Profflrandall of late

years, I should be glad to know whereunto he has gone. With Irv

sincere congratulations for the prosperity of your inetitution and
the best wishes fo r its edvencerrent end your om mood he 21 th,he-

Sincerely yours,
